The Clallam County Historical Society/North Olympic History Center is sponsoring a presentation by Steve Hauff about the Spruce Production Division, set for 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Crescent Bay Lions Clubhouse, 181 Holly Hill Road, Joyce.

This year marks the centennial of the end of World War I, and Clallam County played a significant role during the war. Hauff’s talk will present the cast of characters and events surrounding the Spruce Division and its impact on logging, railroad construction and life at the camps and in Port Angeles.

Cost for the presentation is $20 for members of the Clallam County Historical Society and $25 for non-members. Attendees receive a copy of Hauff’s new book, “The Spruce Production Division in Clallam County.” The book chronicles the operations of the Spruce Division in Clallam County. Included are sections covering the construction of a 37-mile “impossible” railroad in just six months; mill construction; and private operations which utilized Spruce Division personnel. The volume includes more than 100 photos, comprehensive maps and first-hand narratives to describe the project.

Hauff, a retired Clallam County engineer, is the author and co-author of numerous books and articles about railroads.
