So far, so good.

Sequim’s girls basketball squad earned a pair of big non-league wins to open the 2018-2019 season last week.

Jayla Julmist paced Sequim with 17 points and 20 rebounds, and Kalli Wiker erupted for 14 of her 16 points in the second quarter as the Wolves won the season-opener at Rick Kaps Gymnasium on Nov. 29, knocking off 3A non-league foe Bainbridge, 77-68.

“The girls played an amazing game and fought hard all four quarters,” Sequim coach Larry Brown said.

Junior guard Olivia Wikstrom led Bainbridge (1-2) with 32 points.

Julmist and Wikstrom both 11 points in the opening frame, but Sequim held an 18-13 lead. The Wolves, behind Wiker’s sharp shooting (four 3-pointers) increased their lead to 43-26 by halftime and held a 59-42 lead after three quarters.

The Spartans, behind Wikstrom and Grace Carson (14 points) mounted a fourth quarter comeback, but Sequim freshmen Riley Pyeatt (4-for-4 on free throws in the final frame) and Hannah Wagner (nine points) helped seal the victory.

Junior Hope Glasser had a solid game for Sequim with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jessica Dietzman added nine.

Back on their home court on Dec. 3, Sequim routed 1A Coupeville 50-24 in another non-league contest.

Glasser led Sequim with 12 points while Wiker added nine, Melissa Porter had six, and Julmist, Wagner and Dieztman had five each.

Looking ahead

Sequim hosts the Kingston Buccaneers on Dec. 5 to open Olympic League play.

The Wolves are at North Mason on Dec. 7 before hosting 1A Forks on Dec. 10, a varsity girls-boys double-header.
