Employees from Sequim I.T. presented “Smartphone Basics for Apple Phones,” a workshop to patrons and visitors of Shipley Center, on Nov. 29.

The presentation covered a variety of basic topics, including understanding the capabilities of the Settings app, understanding wi-fi versus data, basics of using the phone, Facetime, messaging apps, using the keyboard and more.

More than 30 people attended, each over the age of 45.

One attendees said, “I learned lots of little nuances that no one told me before,” while another commented, “I enjoyed the ease of the instruction – it was basic enough for me to follow along and learn, and even had some humor.”

Because of popular demand, Sequim I.T. plans to teach an additional class at the Shipley Center catered to Android Smartphone users. This class is not currently scheduled, but is anticipated to take place within the next few months, staff said.

“We are passionate about educating the community, and felt this class would be really beneficial to the retired demographic of Sequim,” Sequim I.T. administrator Jessie Crook said.

“Our goal is to provide technology information to the public in an approachable, educational and engaging way,” she said. “We want to help people realize that smartphones can be fun.”

Sequim I.T. teaches a variety of classes out of their office, located on 136 S. Second Ave. in Sequim. Those interested in taking these classes are encouraged to contact their office by calling 360-504-3272. Classes can be customized to the learner’s goals, and group discounts are available by request.

“I’m really thankful that Sequim I.T. put on this excellent technology presentation and that it was so well attended,” Shipley Center executive director Michael Smith said.

“Dues (at Shipley Center) are still just $45, but will be going up soon, so this is a great time to join and begin meeting people and learning,” he said.
