Sequim High School sophomore Olivia Preston is one step closer to her dream of becoming a lawyer.

Preston, 16, received an invitation at the end of January to attend a 10-day intensive law and trial program hosted at Stanford University this summer.

The program is run by Envision, an experiential education organization that provides career, leadership and scholarship opportunities to students in elementary school through college in the U.S. and internationally. The organization collaborates with Stanford Law School for this program.

Preston is looking to the Sequim community to help her raise $5,000 before March 8 so she can attend the program and have enough money to pay for transportation to and from the university.

“Since I was a little kid I’ve been dreaming of becoming a lawyer and making something of myself,” she said.

Preston is a full-time student and also works 20-hours per week at Fifth Avenue Senior Living. She takes all honors or Advanced Placement classes, was on varsity tennis and varsity cheer, and also is involved in several high school clubs.

She said she was ecstatic about the law program until she realized how much the program costs.

Tuition for the program costs about $4,000 which covers room and board, site visits, transportation during the program, lectures, simulations, curriculum and materials, faculty and staff.

According to Envision’s website, students who attend the program undergo an interactive curriculum with insights into the legal profession, experience a mock trial simulation, and attend lectures given by Stanford law professors.

Preston said transportation from Sequim to the university and back is not covered by tuition, which is why she asks for additional funding to cover those costs.

She hopes to become a criminal defense lawyer in the future and believes there is a lot of work to be done to improve the criminal justice system.

“I’m trying to reach my full potential,” she said.

Preston is the youngest of six children and plans to attend college in the future, making her the second person in her family to pursue a degree.
