HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Second-graders have been learning about western expansion in the United States during the 1800s. This included innovations in transportation and communication such as the transcontinental railroad and the Pony Express. Students were able to hear stories of families traveling the Oregon Trail and learned why they were willing to risk the move west. Additionally, they were able to come to understand the hardships and tragedies that Native Americans endured because of westward expansion. Students then created paper quilts, showing key details learned throughout the unit.
