Six Sequim students recently were awarded scholarships from Western Washington University for the 2008-2009 academic year, school officials announced last week.

Lauren Andison and Karina Omdal each received a $3,500 Florine Wheeler Scholarship.

Andison, a junior, is majoring in elementary studies. She has been named to the WWU dean’s list and quarterly president’s list. She is a tutor at Shuksan Middle School in Bellingham and hopes to become an elementary school teacher after graduating from Western. She is the daughter of Dennis and Bobi Andison of Sequim.

Omdal, a 2004 Sequim High School graduate and senior at WWU, is majoring in elementary education studies. She works as a leasing agent at Cascade Meadows Apartments and hopes to become a first-grade teacher after graduating from Western. She is the daughter of Gordon and Marsha Omdal of Sequim.

Holly Faulstich, a 2005 Sequim High School graduate, received a $1,314 Congressman Al Swift Scholarship. Faulstich, a senior, has a 3.96 grade-point-average and is majoring in environmental science. She is participated in a climate change research trip to the Siberian Arctic this summer. She hopes to study terrestrial ecology and climate change impact after graduating from Western. She is the daughter of Dale and Heather Faulstich of Sequim.

Kevin Munro, a 2008 Sequim High School graduate, received a $750 Don C. and Ada C. Walter Memorial Scholarship and a $500 President’s Scholarship. Don C. and Ada G. Walter Memorial Scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate musical ability and potential as music educators. Munro, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.61 grade-point-average at Sequim High School and is interested in enrolling in a Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies program. He is the son of Ron Munro of Quilcene and Debi Munro of Sequim.

Jonathan Thom, a 2008 Sequim High School graduate, received a $1,000 President’s Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year. Thom, an incoming freshman, earned a 3.56 grade-point-average at Sequim High School. He is interested in majoring in psychology or fitness science and hopes to become a personal trainer after graduating from Western. He is the son of Ronald and Susan Thom of Sequim.

Louise Guatney, a 2006 Sequim High School graduate, received a $500 President’s Scholarship. These scholarships are awarded to the top 8 to 10 percent of incoming freshmen and transfer students and are based on superior academic achievement. Guatney, an incoming transfer student, earned a 3.9 grade-point-average at Peninsula College and is interested in majoring in psychology. She hopes to become a psychiatrist or psychologist after graduating from Western. She is the daughter of David and Jeanne Guatney of Sequim.
