A nice way to rebound.

Coming off a pair of narrow league defeats, Sequim’s girls soccer squad earned a 1-0 win at Port Townsend on Sept. 19, getting the game’s lone score from Vianey Cadenas.

The score came in the 60th minute.

The Wolves (1-3) fell to Kingston 1-0 on Sept. 14 and Olympic 3-1 on Sept. 17. Leslie Cisneros had Sequim’s score in the loss to Olympic.

Sequim was slated to host the Bremerton Knights on Sept. 24 — results were unavailable at press time.

The Wolves host Port Angeles at 6:45 p.m. on Sept. 26 and North Mason at 12:45 p.m. on Sept. 28.

Runners up to Challenge

They may be young, but they weren’t about to let a little mud get in their way.

Sequim’s boys cross country squad took top honors among Division III schools at the Three-Course Challenge in Seaside, Ore., on Sept 21.

Junior Mikey Cobb raced to an eighth-place finish on the “medium course” — second among Division II runners — with a 19:07 mark for 5,000 meters, while teammate Chris Jeffko, a sophomore, was 29th (20:22) in the same race.

Sophomore Brendon Despain ran Seaside’s “easy” course (4,500 meters) and placed 14th out of 416 runners, with a time of 16:08; He placed second in his race for Division III.

Junior Peter Ohnstad placed 26th out of 450 runners on the “hard” course, with a time of 20:35.

Sequim’s girls placed seventh among Division II schools, led by freshman Erin Vig. She was 43rd out of 276 runners on the “medium” course with a 26:22 finish, second among her division.

Thousands of runners from schools in Washington and Oregon flock to Seaside for the cross country meet renown for its mud pit.

The Wolves host Klahowya and Kingston today, Sept. 25.

Sequim and Port Townsend take on cross-peninsula rival Port Angeles at the Clallam County Fairgrounds in Port Angeles on Oct. 2.

Tennis takes down the Knights

Sequim’s Wolves doubles teams helped the squad pull out a win against the Bremerton Knights on Sept. 19.

All four varsity boys doubles teams won their matches — Brandon Payne/Matthew Richards (6-1, 6-0), Danny Willis/Jerry Bryan (4-6, 6-4, 7-5), Nick Johnston/Kevin Cassal (6-3, 6-4) and Stephen Prorok/Wesley Gilchrist (6-3, 6-4).

No. 1 singles player Victor Lam defeated the Knights’ top seed Tim Styrlund (7-5, 6-4) while singles seeds two and three Saul Nava and Henry He both lost their matches.

As of Monday, the Wolves are 2-1 overall and 1-0 in league. The team narrowly lost a non-league matchup last Tuesday in North Kitsap, 4-3.

Sequim’s match against Port Angeles, slated for Sept. 23, was rescheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 23, because of rain. The Wolves play Klahowya (0-1 in league, 0-2 overall) at home on Wednesday, Sept. 25, and travel to Olympic (1-0, 2-1) on Friday, Sept. 27.

Swimmers splashed

Sequim’s swimming and diving squad started the season off on the proverbial road.

In the season opener on Sept. 17, Kingston topped the Wolves 116-60.

On Sept. 19, cross-peninsula rivals Port Angeles played rude hosts in a 143-40 decision, placing first in all 12 events. Roughrider swimmers tallied two state meet-qualifying times and eight new individual district meet-qualifying times.

Sequim (0-2) hosts Port Townsend on Sept. 26 and Olympic on Oct. 3.

Wolves top Trojans on court

After a bit of a hiccup in the first game, Sequim rallied to smother the Olympic Trojans 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-10, 25-7) on Sept. 17.

“We started off fairly well (and) stayed ahead until 20 points and stalled,”

Sequim coach Jennie Webber-Heilman said. “Olympic served tough and won the first game. We served tougher the rest of the match.”

Alexas Besand led the team with nine kills while Sydney Munn added five. Alyse Armstrong paced the offense with 19 assist, four kills, two aces and was 20-of-22 serving. She had a nine-point run in the fourth game to clinch the victory.

On defense, Hannah Hudson kept the floor clean with 24 digs and Emily Wallner had 11, while Armstrong added two blocks.

Sequim (1-0 in league, 1-1 overall) was slated to play Port Townsend on Sept. 19, to host Peninsula on Sept. 23 and Bremerton on Sept. 24 — results of the matches were not available at press time. The Wolves are at Port Angeles on Sept. 26 and the Mark Morris Tournament in Longview on Sept. 28. Their next home match is against Klahowya on Oct. 3.
