Wrestling: Wolves all-in at All Comers tourney

SHS grapplers prep for sub-regional, regional tourneys

Sequim wrestling finished its regular season with its annual All Comers Tournament on Jan. 30.

The tournament featured 23 Sequim wrestlers vying against eight other teams in round robin weight class face-offs.

“It’s a chance to give all of our wrestlers some more mat time at the end of the season,” said Sequim head coach Charles Drabek.

Six Sequim wrestlers finished their regular season as winners of their weight class — Grant Pierson at 145 pounds, Kevyn Ward 160 pounds, Nick Barrett 285 pounds, and Kiara Pierson, Alma Mendoza and Madison Uranga in different girl categories.

Mendoza said she and rival Chloe Rogers of Port Townsend, both state-ranked wrestlers, opted not to wrestle at the tournament because they likely would be facing off a few times in the postseason.

The tournament also served as a primer for sub-regionals for the Wolves’ boys and girls with the boys heading to Olympic High School in Bremerton and the girls to Decatur High School in Federal Way both on Feb. 5-6. Coaches created brackets for sub-regionals on Feb. 1, which weren’t available by press time.

Earlier in the week Sequim finished up its regular season with a dual win over the North Mason Bulldogs on Jan. 27 in Belfair by 42-25.

Three Wolves recorded pins — Craig Baker at 138 pounds pinned Antonio Ocasio in 4:23, Grant Pierson, 145, pinned Eugene Macero in 2:42, and Kevyn Ward, 160, pinned Zacaris Gaspar-Hernandez in 1:59. Sequim’s Ben Newell won 3-2 over Colton Peterson at 132 pounds and Hayden Gresli won 7-2 over Daniel Pulley at 152 pounds, too.

Sequim won four matches by forfeits while North Mason won six matches, two by pin and two by tech fall.

In junior varsity matches, Jesse Schleve, 138 pounds, pinned Gregorio Pedro Alonzo in 4:24, Sven Wiker, 152, pinned Chase Evans in 19 seconds, Nick Barrett, 285, pinned Nikolas Marsh in 18 seconds, and Austin Budd, 160, won 22-5 over Josh Raymond.

On the season, the Wolves finished 5-3 in head-to-head team match-ups improving from last year’s 4-3-1.
