City band to play ‘Joyous Sounds’ for Sunday concert

Members of the Sequim City Band invite the community to hear the “Joyous Sounds” of the season at the group’s annual holiday concert, set for 3 p.m. on Sunday Dec. 15, at the Sequim High School auditorium, 533 N. Sequim Ave.

The band, under the direction of Tyler Benedict and with guest announcer Karla Messerschmidt-Morgan providing program notes, offers some holiday favorites at this free event.

Included is Tschaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite,” inviting listeners to join Clara and her Nutcracker Prince in the Land of Sweets as the Sugar Plum Fairy and various sweets from around the world dance in honor of Clara saving the Prince from the Mouse King and his legions.

Per tradition, the audience will be invited to participate with the band in “Christmas Pops Sing-along.”

Said Debbi Soderstrom, president of the Sequim City Band board, “The Christmas carol sing-a-long, a perennial hit with the audience, provides everyone the opportunity to lend their voices to the joyous music of the season.”

The band will send the audience out into the December night air with a compilation of Irving Berlin’s “Happy Holiday” and “White Christmas.”

The band plays its final concert of its 2019-2020 indoor series on Sunday, March 1, at the Port Angeles High School auditorium.
