Local 3-G service gets boost
Wireless calling, text messaging and surfing the Web on the Verizon Wireless high-speed 3G network is easier and faster for residents and travelers in Sequim, thanks to a new cell site on the town’s north side. Thrift shop open Saturday
The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s Thrift Shop, 204 W. Bell St., Sequim, will be open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 2.

Pet food demonstration
Best Friend Nutrition hosts a Canidae brand dog and cat food demonstration from noon-4 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at 680 W. Washington St., Sequim. Samples, coupons and prize-drawings for dog and cat products are offered.
Healthy soil presentation
Dr. Craig Cogger presents “Soil is the Key to Great Gardening” at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at McComb Gardens, 751 McComb Road, Sequim. Cogger is an Extension and research soil scientist with Washington State University, Puyallup. The seminar is free; come early, seating is limited.
Wine tasting, dinner offered
The Olympic Peninsula Enological Society offers a tasting of Turley wines at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, at C’est Si Bon, 23 Cedar Park Drive, Port Angeles. Six 2004 Zinfan-

Certification earned
Paul Collins, owner of Enviro-Clean Northwest, has earned certification as a mold remediator by the Mold Inspection Consulting and Remediation Organization.
Collins also holds a certificate as a mold inspector from the organization, a Washington state contractor’s license and is one of the few contractors in Western Washington who carries mold insurance.

Angeles Millwork, Hartnagel award prizes at Expo
Kevin Wiegel of Angeles Millwork & Lumber Co. and Hartnagel Building Supply presented prizes to drawing winners at his company’s booth at the 2011 Building, Remodeling and Energy Expo, March 12-13.

Sequim teacher wins Expo drawing
Kreps Construction, LLC, named Isabella Morrison of Sequim the winner of its annual giveaway after Morrison entered a free drawing at the Building, Remodeling and Energy Expo, March 12-13.
Morrison won a coat rack. Other entrants received a money-off flyer for remodeling labor.

Salal permit sales begin at Olympic National Forest
Permits for harvest of salal in Olympic National Forest are available at the Forks Ranger District.
Cost is $150 for a permit to be used up to two months. A valid U.S. photo I.D. is required; age 18 and up; cash or check only. A map and guidelines will be provided with each permit. One hundred permits will be issued, with a lottery if demand exceeds supply.

Joella Cary of McComb Gardens designed the storefront garden display at McComb Gardens.
Cary is a certified professional horticulturist, taking pesticide management classes through Washington State University, and has studied garden design.
