Klahowya built a 22-7 lead by halftime and held off a third quarter Sequim charge for a 44-21 Olympic League win on Oct. 18.
The loss keeps the Wolves winless (0-5 in league play, 0-7 overall) heading into their rivalry game against Port Angeles next week.
“They executed on their big plays and we didn’t,” Sequim coach Erik Wiker said. “They made plays when they needed to (and) we did not take advantage (of their mistakes).”
Klahowya jumped out to a 15-0 lead after one quarter as Eagle quarterback Konnor Langholff threw for a score and ran for another.
Sequim trimmed the lead in the second quarter when Sequim quarterback found Brett Wright from nine yards out for the score. But the Eagles responded before halftime, as Langholff hit Jon Harris for a 23-yard strike.
Harris opened the second half with an eight-yard TD run.
Sequim mounted a comeback as Moroles connected with Wright once again, this time from 51 yards out, to cut Klahowya lead to 29-14.
The Wolves got within eight after Chris Whittaker finished a drive with a 2-yard scoring plunge.
However, Klahowya ruled the fourth quarter, sealing the win touchdown rushed from Harris and Langholff.
“They’re definitely a stronger team (this year); they have all seniors in the backfield,” Wiker said.
Moroles finished 16-of-28 for 205 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He added 91 yards on the ground.
Wright had 10 receptions for 121 yards and Whittaker rushed for 65 yards.
Riders in their sights
Sequim and Port Angeles renew a series that’s been off-and-on since the Wolves began their football program in the early 1900s. And for more than half a decade, it’s been all Sequim. The Wolves haven’t lost a game in this cross-peninsula rivalry since a 27-20 defeat in 2007.
All-time, the Roughriders have won 50 of the 76 meetings.
Wiker said Port Angeles (1-4 in league, 1-6 overall) has improved this year compared to 2012’s winless campaign, topping Bremerton 36-14 on Oct. 11.
“They’re going to come right at us with a good power game,” Wiker said.
Much like last season — down years for both programs — this rivalry game is a key game for players in green and purple.
“It’ll definitely make the year for the squad that wins,” Wiker said.
