Kathleen Mary Stanley of Sequim died of natural causes on Aug. 6, 2020.

She was 75.

Stanley was born April 7, 1945.

Burial is at Sequim View Cemetery.

Marilyn Cross

March 14, 1941 – July 7, 2020

Marilyn Cross, 33 year Sequim resident, died at home of cancer on July 7, 2020. She was born on March 14, 1941, in Rialto, California.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Larry; daughters, Kim (Mike) Curtin and great-grandson, Jac Curtin, Kari Hollingsworth, and Kirstie (Aaron) Hubbard; grandson, Brian (Roberta) Curtin and great-granddaughters, Talia and Gemma Curtin.

She was preceded in death by grandson, Joey Curtin, who blessed us with Jac.

James Patrick Richmond

1948 – 2020

James Patrick Richmond, a resident of Sequim, passed away unexpectedly at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, on August 6, 2020, at the age of 72.

James is a graduate of the University of Florida, B.A. and M.Ed., and the University of Puget Sound, J.D. He had a storied career, including serving as a merchant seaman, a transportation manager in Alaska during the construction of the pipeline, and over 35 years of legal experience as a civil defense litigator and educator.

He is survived by his wife, Anna; sons, Jason, Logan, and Chester; granddaughter, Isabella; and six siblings. He was predeceased by his parents.

Gordon Richard Bilyard

November 28, 1948 – June 17, 2020

On June 17, 2020, the world lost Gordon Richard Bilyard, a man who understood, respected and loved the magnificence and the power of the ocean; he lived to breathe the salty air and let the winds, tides and currents challenge his skill and determine his course and destiny. It could be said, “the ocean was his mistress.”

Gordon was a scientist with his PhD in oceanography. He was a sailor who was lucky enough to live his lifelong dream of owning a seaworthy ocean sailboat that gave him the freedom he needed to explore the Salish Sea, including the San Juan Islands, the Canadian Gulf Islands, and the Inside Passage from Bellingham to Juneau, Alaska, and into Glacier Bay. He was happiest on these waterways, always with camera in hand to try to capture the magnificence of God’s beautiful earth as seen only from the ocean.

He was a proud member of the North Olympic Sail and Power Squadron (NOSPS) where he spent retirement years expertly sharing his knowledge of the ocean, boating, and safety.

As a skilled boating educator, he sought to share his love of boating while imparting to other boaters the importance of taking personal responsibility to become a knowledgeable and safe boater, always respectful of the ocean and each other. He valued team teaching with other NOSPS members developing friendships that fed his soul. He enjoyed helping develop and improve curriculum on a local and a national level.

He was the proud recipient of several awards from North Olympic Power and Sail Squadron including teacher of the year and member of the year. He was proud of the awards but he valued even more the friendships and memories he developed along the way, and took pride in the number of students he taught that became active members of the group and went on to become part of the teaching team.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Catherine Bilyard at their home in Hayden, Idaho; his son, Nicholas (Erica) Bilyard of Kent; and daughter, Donaca (Jeff) Young of Ogden, Utah. He is also survived by his mother, Alexandra Bilyard of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; and his brother, Bruce (Lisa) Bilyard in Connecticut. His proud legacy includes his two grandsons, Alexander and Grant Bilyard of Kent; two step-grandsons, Ethan and Logan Bowers of Moses Lake; three step-granddaughters, Savannah Spanton of Othello, McKenzie and Serenity Spanton of Spokane; and a five-car garage filled with beautifully refurbished or hand-crafted small boats.

Gordon was preceded in death by his father, Richard Gordon Bilyard and his wife, Margaret Bilyard.

A donation in Gordon’s name may be made to the Northwest Maritime Center in Port Townsend. This program will help carry on his legacy and his dreams.

Gordon will be returned to his final resting place, the Salish Sea, with a Celebration of his Life and an at sea service which will be conducted by his friends of North Olympic Sail and Power Squadron and Sequim Bay Yacht Club when group gatherings are again allowed.
