Sequim City Council members approved a proclamation naming 2021 “The Year of Kindness” at their Dec. 14 meeting.

The proclamation stated the social and economic impact of the global pandemic, racial and equity tensions, restrictions on in-person gatherings, the presidential election and community polarization surrounding the medication-assisted treatment (MAT) clinic as reasons to encourage acts of kindness.

The proclamation “directs City staff and encourages community members, businesses and nonprofits to initiate a series of activities in support of kind actions.”

In a press release last week, Sequim mayor William Armacost noted, “Before we speak, ask yourself is it kind, is it necessary, and is it loving? It costs nothing to share kindness. And remember, the greatest gift you can give someone is forgiveness. We are looking forward to working with the community towards spreading more kindness in 2021.”

Throughout the year, city staff will be giving tips and offering activities that support kindness in the community.
