DAR chapter members say thanks for promoting patriotism

The local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution last week lauded a number of individuals and businesses/ groups for their efforts to educate the public and promote patriotism.

With Gen. George Washington —played by Vern Frykholm Jr. — in attendance to help distribute honors, 12 members of the Michael Trebert chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) feted five award recipients at the group’s annual George Washington Recognition Tea Ceremony on Feb. 17, held at the Veterans Center in Port Angeles.

The awards, group members said, support the three missions of the NSDAR: education, historic preservation and patriotism.

Award recipients included:

• Ivan Cortani, 8, for education. Cortani was named a Very Important Patriot for his contribution at community activities — in particular two ceremonies: Sequim Veterans Day and Sequim Wreaths Across America, both held in late 2020. “Ivan demonstrated learning about American history and the fundamental principles upon which our nation was founded,” DAR members said. “Ivan also respected the Pledge of Allegiance and the Flag of the United States of America. Lastly, (he) showed courtesy and respect for others.”

• Port Angeles High School senior Meagan McCann, for patriotism. McCann is the 2020 recipient of the bronze ROTC Medal. The medal is awarded to either a junior or senior student in the Port Angeles High School JROTC program, as qualified by Capt. Jonathan Picker.

• Mt. Pleasant I.G.S Store in Port Angeles, for education and patriotism. Accepted by store owners Glenn and Kathy Johnson, this honor recognizes the a local business for showing correct usage for their respectful flying of the flag of the United States since 1959.

• The Sequim Gazette, for “outstanding work that repeatedly promotes education, historic preservation and patriotism.” Editor Michael Dashiell accepted the award.

• KSQM 91.5 FM, for “repeatedly announcing and promoting local education opportunities, historic preservation, and continued patriotism.” Announcer Susan Sorenson accepted the award.
