Sunrise Rotary revitalizes Boys Girls Club’s game room

Project adds paint, coat and backpack hangers

Leaders at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St., hope to have a new look in the game room this fall for returning students.

They’ve partnered with the Sequim Sunrise Rotary this month to paint the Carroll C. Kendall unit’s game room and extend coat and backpack hangers.

“We are so excited to help them,” said Ann Flack, president of Sequim Sunrise Rotary.

“They’re an asset in how much they bring to the enjoyment of the youth in our community. I think the kids will be so surprised when school starts back up. It’s totally changed.”

Flack said Rotarian volunteers’ original intent was to rip out old carpet in the game room, but after talking with club staff they decided to help with another club project to paint the room’s interior.

“We wanted to brighten it and make it look clean,” she said.

After starting last week, she estimates 11 volunteers — including Rotarian Tom Hartig’s son Michael, a professional painter who did painting in high, hard-to-reach spots — put in at least 110 volunteer hours so far, with work expected to finish this week.

The Sunrise Rotary purchases supplies and paint, Flack said, including more than 50 new coat hangers.

Janet Gray, the club’s resource development director, said the club also received donated carpet and new game room equipment.

“The idea of the makeover was to welcome kids back and have a refresh,” she said.

“It’s really a blank slate and hopefully we’ll pick up more of the Boys & Girls Club branding and logos, things that depict different programs, on it.”

Gray said they “really like” the work the Rotarians have done and a few of the colors are the same as inside the new Port Angeles Boys & Girls Club.

She adds that window trims were beat up and they’ve since received an overhaul.

“It looks amazing,” Flack said.

As for back-to-school plans, Gray said they’re still assessing how things will play out over the next few weeks.
