A pair of big Olympic League wins — one a nail-biter, another a blowout — had the Wolves with plenty of momentum heading into spring break.
The Wolves improved to 3-2 in Olympic League play and 7-4 overall, leaping into second place behind North Kitsap, with wins against Port Angeles and Kingston last week.
On April 4, Logan Hankinson broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run single in the sixth inning to give the host Wolves a 4-2 victory against the Port Angeles Roughriders.
Nigel Christian threw a complete game for the win, spreading out seven hits, striking out three Riders and walking none in seven innings.
After Port Angeles took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, Christian led off the bottom of the inning with a triple and later scored on a James Thayer RBI single.
In the fourth inning, Evan Hurn led off with a double and scored on a two-out RBI single by Hankinson to tie the game.
It stayed 2-2 until the sixth, when Christian reached on an error and Ian Dennis was hit by a pitch. Hankinson then ripped a single to center field to score the pair. Sequim loaded the bases with a walk and another hit batter but Curan Bradley worked out of a jam with a pair of strikeouts.
Port Angeles got a runner on with one out but Christian induced a game-ending double play to quell the rally.
A day later, Sequim had an easier time, crushing Kingston 15-1 in a mercy rule-shortened, five-inning affair that included an 11-run second inning.
Hurn had a double and triple, and both he and Hankinson had three RBIs on the day. Gavin Velarde went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored, and Daniel Harker added a double and two RBIs.
In all, Sequim tallied 15 hits and four walks.
Harker picked up the win on the mound for Sequim, striking out nine Bucs for all three outs; he gave up three hits and one unearned run. Thayer and Austin Hilliard worked a pair of scoreless, hitless innings in relief. In all, Sequim pitchers recorded 13 of their 15 outs via the strikeout.
Sequim was slated to be back from their break April 12 to host North Mason — results were not available at press time.
The Wolves are at Port Townsend on April 14, host Vashon in a non-league game on April 15. They play at North Kitsap on April 18 and host Bremerton on April 19.
