moves to SunLand
Rotary Club of Sequim is moving its weekly meetings to SunLand Golf & Country Club beginning Thursday, June 24. The Noon Rotary club meets for lunch at 11:45 a.m. each Thursday.
The club’s 42nd annual Salmon Bake & BBQ fundraiser is Sunday, Aug. 15, at Carrie Blake Park. It features fresh baked salmon and pork barbecued on-site, live music, raffles, vendors, not-for-profit displays and fun for the whole family. Proceeds help fund local charities and youth activities.

Free shredding, food collection
Windermere’s SunLand volunteers are shredding business/personal items and collecting food for the Sequim Food Bank from 10 a.m-1 p.m. Friday, June 18, in the SunLand Home Owners Association/Windermere SunLand parking lot, 137 Fairway Drive, Sequim, for this year’s Community Service Day.
Each year, Windermere agents, managers, owners and staff from across the Western United States gather together and devote their workday to making a positive change through local service projects and volunteerism.

Strawberry shortcake
Friends of the Fields, a division of the North Olympic Land Trust, serves strawberry shortcake at the Sequim Open Aire Market for four weeks starting on Saturday, June 19.
Made from fresh local berries, buttermilk biscuits and fresh whipped cream, shortcake will be served 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. at Second and Cedar streets in downtown Sequim.
The event will raise money to protect farmland.
Free dinners continue at Trinity Methodist
A free community dinner is at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 24, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.
Reservations are required. Call the church from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner at 683-5367.
The tentative menu is hot pulled pork or beef sandwiches, green beans, green salad, applesauce, cake and beverages. Low-sugar and gluten-free desserts are available.
Vocalist Tom Kennedy will entertain with songs from the 1940-1990s. Homework help is available for students.
The dinners are offered the last Thursday of each month and are for anyone who would like a night out, including those whose budgets may be tight late in the month.

Easy riding
Clallam Transit System has launched a countywide online bus trip planner via the Google Transit Partner Program.
The program allows users to visit www.clallamtransit.com, enter their starting and ending location and view an interactive map that show the corresponding bus stop, route and fare information.
King’s Way vacation Bible school
"Firefighters" is the theme of vacation Bible school from 9:30 a.m.-noon, Monday-Friday, June 21-25 at King’s Way Foursquare Church, 1023 Kitchen-Dick Road, Sequim.

Apply for grants by July 1
The Seattle Foundation seeks applications for grants from the Phillips Memorial Fund from organizations that provide services to improve life in Clallam County.
The estate of Joy Phillips established the Benjamin N. Phillips Memorial Fund in 2006 to honor the memory of her late husband. Approximately $250,000 will be distributed in 2010. Previous grants have ranged from $1,000-$25,000, with an average grant about $10,000.
Grants are awarded to 501(c)(3) organizations that serve Clallam County. All applications must be e-mailed by July 1. To download an application or for more information about the Phillips Memorial Fund, visit www.seattlefoundation.org.
Hot rods, hot dogs
The fifth annual Father’s Day Hot Rods and Hot Dogs will be held from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, June 20, at Deer Park Cinema, 96 Deer Park Road, Port Angeles.
Bring hotrods by 10:30 a.m. to allow for parking. The free event includes music, food, awards and a paved parking lot.

Sequim PC User’s Group is planning a media and technology fair in April 2011 at Sequim High School.

Gazette sports editor wins SPJ award
Michael Dashiell, Sequim Gazette sports editor, won first place in the Society of Professional Journalists’ 2009 Northwest Excellence in Journalism Contest in May.
Dashiell took top honors in the Non-Daily Newspaper division, sports reporting category, for "Concussions hit home with Sequim family," appearing in the June 10, 2009, edition of the Gazette. The article detailed how concussions affected local sports players and the efforts to bolster safety practices for high school athletes.
