Sequim senior Riley Pyeatt and sophomore Colby Ellefson continue to race in the lead packs in multi-team league meets, earning top-two finishes at an Oct. 6 league meet at Gordon Field in Kitsap County
Pyeatt finished the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 13.6 seconds for an individual win — her 10th consecutive regular league meet win dating back to her sophomore year — helping the Wolves edge North Mason for second place in the team scores.
Teammate Kaitlyn Bloomenrader earned a fifth-place finish in 21:13.
Sequim’s Aidyn Shingleton (24:00) and Anastasia Updike (24:12) placed 16th and 17th, respectively, and Nikoline Updike placed 29th in 25:39. Mia Kirner’s 31st place finish in 26:01 in the 71-runner field helped the Wolves earn a tiebreaker win over North Mason.
Backed by senior Genesi Funston’s second place individual finish, North Kitsap (42 team points) was the top girls team, with Sequim and North Mason tallying 66 points. Port Angeles’ girls placed sixth.
Similar to last week’s meet in Sequim, Port Angeles’ Jack Gladfelter (16:30) was the top boys runner, with Sequim’s Ellefson (17:04) edging Port Angeles’ Maxwell Baeder by a half-second for second place.
PA’s Roughriders put five runners in the top 10 to cruise to a team win 28 team points, topping Kingston by 20 points. Sequim’s boys placed fifth out of the seven competing teams.
Sequim’s Calem Klinger set a personal best, finishing 26th in 19:49. Owen Randall raced to a 29th place finish in 19:59, and Mirek Skov was 36th with a 20:50 finish and Connor Goff finished 39th in 21:14.
In the boys’ junior varsity race, freshman Sean Southard was Sequin’s top finisher, placing 38th overall out of 81 runners in a personal best 22:46.
Pyeatt competes in ‘elite’ race
Pyeatt competed in the toughest “elite” category at the Nike Hole-In-The-Wall Invitational in Lakewood on Oct. 9, placing 31st out of 138 runners with a time of 18:35 over the 5,000 meters — just three seconds off her 5k personal best.
Pyeatt was competing against more than 100 of the best runners from 4A and 3A schools in Washington state and some from 5A Oregon schools. She was the only Olympic Peninsula athlete to compete in the race.
Ellefson placed 22nd in the men’s varsity gold race in 16:34, a personal record. Port Angeles’ Gladfelter was fourth (15:58) and Baeder was 20th (16:30) in the same race.
Bloomenrader placed 18th overall in the varsity silver race, finishing in 20:18 — setting a personal record by nearly a minute. Shingleton (159th) also set a PR with a 23:08 finish.
Klinger finished eighth (18:29.7) in the men’s JV silver race, as Sequim’s boys finished 28th as a team in that division.
Coming up
The Wolves are at Battle Point Park on Bainbridge Island for a league meet on Oct. 13, the final tune-up for the Olympic League championships set for Thursday, Oct. 21, at The Cedars at Dungeness golf course in Sequim. The boys’ junior varsity race kicks off the meet at 4 p.m., followed by the girls’ varsity/JV race at 4:30 p.m. and the boys’ varsity race at 5:01 p.m.
Top teams and individuals from the league meet advance to the West Central District meet set for Oct. 30 at the Chambers Creek Properties at University Place on Oct. 30.
From there, teams and individual races advance to the state 2A meet held at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
