Olympic Medical Cancer Center in Sequim has successfully met the standards of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) APEx – Accreditation Program for Excellence, Olympic Medical Center representatives said this month.

APEx is an accreditation program developed by ASTRO that validates a radiation oncology facility’s excellence in delivering high-quality patient care.

The Cancer Center’s four-year accreditation is effective until October 2025.

Accreditation through APEx is described as “a voluntary rigorous multi-step process during which a facility’s practices are evaluated using consensus-based standards that include feedback and insight from the on-site radiation team.” The Cancer Center had to demonstrate its safety and quality processes and validate that it adheres to patient-centered care by promoting effective communication, coordinated treatments and strong patient engagement, OMC representatives said.

“To have a comprehensive cancer center that functions this well with this many resources in a relatively rural area is extremely unique,” said Dr. Lindsay Jensen, radiation oncologist at Olympic Medical Cancer Center. “The quality of care that we provide is on par with a big city in almost every area.”
