The Sequim girls basketball team didn’t play its best game, according to coach Joclin Julmist. But the team got great games from Hannah Bates and Jelissa Julmist and played well enough to remain unbeaten in a 70-43 win over Bremerton on Dec. 11.
“We didn’t play a good game tonight,” Joclin Julmist said. “We made to many mistakes (and) we committed too many unforced turnovers. The girls need to be patient when they have the ball. Our shot was off tonight. We missed a lot of open shots which kept the game close.”
Bates hit five 3-pointers, shooting 5-for-10 from beyond the arc, and led the Wolves with 22 points. She also nearly had a triple-double with nine steals and nine assists. Jelissa Julmist had a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. She added seven steals.
Jolene Vaara had 12 points, four boards, two steals and two blocks.
“She did everything for us tonight. She played great help side defense and individual defense and shot the ball when she was open,” coach Julmist said.
Bobbi Mixon added 11 points.
“(Mixon) found her stroke tonight … she is starting to do what’s expected of her,” Julmist said.
Earlier in the week, Sequim raced out to a 28-8 lead and cruised to a 73-51 win over Bainbridge on Dec. 7.
“The girls played very well during the first quarter,” Joclin Julmist said. “We did a good job playing defense, which created a few turnovers, and we got a few easy baskets. The girls did a great job passing the ball and looking for each other.”
The Wolves had six players who scored eight or more points. Jelissa Julmist led the Wolves with 18 points and 20 rebounds. Bates ran the offense and chipped in 14 points and six assists, while Hannah Wagner played great on the defensive end, Joclin Julmist said.
Wagner had with 11 points and three steals. Vaara added 10 points and seven rebounds, including five offensive rebounds, while Addie Smith came off the bench for nine points. Lauryn Stephens chipped in eight points.
