PC gets split at home tourney

An up-and-down season continues for Peninsula’s men.

The Pirates split a pair of games at their own First Federal Pirate Classic last weekend, missing a chance for their first back-to-back victories of the 2015-2016 campaign.

Peninsula (3-4) opened the tourney Dec. 5 with a 75-72 win against Tacoma.

Deonte Dixon led the Pirates with 19 points and four rebounds, Darrion Daniels hit for 14 and Ryley Callaghan had 10. Patrick Ling and Kahliel Wyatt each had 18 points each for Tacoma.

Peninsula held the lead for much of the game, and with seconds remaining and holding a 73-72 saw PC freshman Daniels sink a pair of free throws. PC coach Mitch Freeman elected to foul on the ensuing play and it worked, as Tacoma missed free throws and a layup as time expired.

On Dec. 6, South Puget Sound’s Clippers jumped out to a 13-point lead and held on for an 86-72 win over the home Pirates. Dez Stoudamire, cousin of former NBA and Arizona standouts Damon Stoudamire and Salim Stoudamire, stole the show with 28 points, including five 3-pointers.

Dixon led PC with 19 points and Dimitri Amos added 17. Callaghan had 11 points, six rebounds and six assists, and Jeremiah Hobbs added 11 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots.

Peninsula has seven games remaining before opening North Division play at Edmonds in January. Next up for the PC men is a road trip to face Centralia on Dec. 11 and then Clark, ranked No. 3 in the first Alaska Airlines Coaches Poll, on Dec. 12.
