‘Junkyard’ volleyball

camp set for July

The Sequim Junkyard Dawgs Volleyball camp is scheduled for 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on July 28-31 at the Sequim High School gymnasium, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

The camp is open to Sequim players entering grades 9-12 this fall; a few spaces remain and are to be filled on a first-come, first-paid basis. Players from other schools may register after July 10.

Middle-school players may register and participate if camp organizers receive at least nine registrants of those grade levels (6-8).

Cost is $205.

Bill Neville, former coach for the University of Washington Husky volleyball team and 1984 gold medal-winning U.S. men’s Olympic team, runs the camp.

Bruce to run for Great Falls

Christina Bruce, a 2009 graduate of Sequim High School, has signed a letter of intent to run for the University of Great Falls (Montana) cross country and track and field teams next school year, coach Jim Brewer said last week.

During her senior year, Bruce helped the Wolves finish fourth overall at the state cross-country championship. She competed at the state cross country championships all four of her high school years.

She also competed in nine marathons including a fifth-place overall at the 2009 Yakima River Canyon Marathon.

Bruce finished her high school career with a 3.30 grade-point average and plans to major in psychology and health and human performance at the University of Great Falls.

Sequim Wolves host

summer football camp

The Sequim High School athletic department hosts a youth football camp, open to students entering grades 1-8.

The camp is scheduled for 9 a.m.-noon, Aug. 3-6, meeting at the Sequim Middle School gymnasium, 301 W. Hendrickson Road.

Required equipment includes outdoor shoes and clothing for play outside. Cost is $45 per athlete; the fee includes a camp T-shirt and a football.

The camp features instruction by staff from Sequim High School. The focus is on football skills, development and team-building principles. A "Punt, Pass & Kick" competition is scheduled along with daily flag football games.

Rowing group gives

on-water lessons

The Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association and the Clallam County Family YMCA offer on-water rowing lessons from 10-11:30 a.m. on Saturdays from the association’s boathouse at 1431 Ediz Hook.

The program is on-the-water rowing for those ages 16 and older, using eight-seat shells with sweep rowing.

Anyone wishing to participate with the rowing club must take one of these five-week sessions first.

Two remaining sessions are July 18-Aug. 5 and Aug. 22-Sept. 19.

Preregistration is required. Cost is $60 for YMCA members or $120 for nonmembers. Participants also need a certified Red Cross float test before being allowed to get into boats.

Trails group hosts work party

The Peninsula Trails Coalition members host their second Saturday work party from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. on July 11, doing grass- and weed-control on a section of the Olympic Discovery Trail east of Sequim.

Participants meet at the kiosk at Whitefeather Way and are asked to bring brooms, loppers, square-tipped shovels, grass blowers and water.

Lunch is provided for those who RSVP by noon July 9.

NFL Flag opens

registration for fall league

The Sequim NFL Flag fall league is open to boys and girls of ages 6-12.

The co-ed league with multiple age divisions runs from Sept. 3-Nov. 2 with games at the Sequim High School playfields, 601 N. Sequim Ave., during afternoons.

Register and pay online at: www.sequimnfl-flag.com. Cost is $35 for Boys & Girls Club members; nonmembers pay an $8 seasonal membership fee.

Required equipment includes a mouth guard and cleats.

The league also is seeking volunteers to coach teams, referee games, help with field/equipment, be team parents, etc.

Pre-fair horse show set

The Jefferson County 4-H Horse Project is hosting the annual Open/4-H Pre-Fair Horse Show on July 18-19 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Port Townsend. Performance classes start at 9 a.m. July 18 while Western Games start at 10 a.m. July 19.

Class costs are: $5 for performance, $4 for gaming classes for entries post marked by July 14. There is an additional $1 fee per class for entries postmarked after July 14 and the day of show.

Junior soccer opens

registration for fall season

Sequim Jr. Soccer officials are taking registrations for players in U-6 to U-15 age groups for the upcoming 2009 fall season.

Registration is online only through July 19 at www.sequimjuniorsoccer.com. Cost is $40 per player and a family cap of $110. There is a $10 late fee after online registration ends.
