Spring sports preview: Expectations high for SHS fastpitch squad

After losing just four varsity players from last season’s 10-6 squad, Sequim’s fastpitch team looks primed for another strong season

Head coach Mike McFarlen likes his team’s chances this spring.

“We expect to be in the top two in league,” he said.

A strength of this team should be the infield, McFarlen said, from sophomore third baseman Taylee Rome to junior shortstop Hannah Bates, senior Addie Smith and juniors Amelia Pozernick at first.

“I feel really good about (our infield),” McFarlen said.

Locking down the outfield are Pozernick in left, senior Lili Fili in center and senior Katelyn Glass, while senior Christy Grubb will handle catching responsibilities along with freshman Michaela Green.

Handling most of the pitching is junior Lainy Vig.

“She’ll definitely be our horse,” McFarlen said.

Vig, Grubb and junior Angel Wagner will see most of the time on the mound this spring, he said, though the Wolves do have three solid pitchers on junior varsity as well.

With Bates leading off, Sequim’s offense figures to be potent this season, McFarlen said. Last year’s team saw the Wolves score at least 10 runs eight times.

“The top six (in the lineup) are pretty solid,” he said.

Top competition for Sequim in the Olympic League, McFarlen surmised, is a deep Port Angeles team and pitching-strong North Kitsap squad.
