Highway headaches
Brush cutting continues along U.S. Highway 101 from Blyn to Gardiner between 9 a.m.-
3 p.m. through Friday, March 12.
Both directions of the highway from milepost 271 to milepost 278, Woods Road to Old Gardiner Road, will have flagger-controlled, one-way alternating traffic, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Sign language
Sign language classes will be held in
Sequim and Port Angeles from 6-8 p.m. for 10 Tuesdays beginning March 30 at the Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2781 Towne Road, Sequim. Cost is $76.
Another beginning sign language class runs 6-8 p.m. Wednesdays beginning March 31 at Peninsula College in Port Angeles. A more advanced class is from 6-8 p.m. Thursdays beginning April 1 at the college. Cost is $66 for each class at the college.

Strait facts, Sound science
Curtis Tanner of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers speaks about the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the North Olympic Peninsula at a joint meeting of Clallam County’s Marine Resources Committee and Planning Commission at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 17, in Room 160 of the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
Tanner is assigned to the Puget Sound Nearshore Ecosystem Recovery Project and the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife. His presentation will include Puget Sound-wide scientific information the project uses to guide large restoration projects.

Care for orchids
Olympic Peninsula Orchid Society will offer supplies and advice about how to repot orchids at its meeting at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 11, at Sequim Community Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.
Bring a clean pot, either plastic or clay, and an orchid.
A fee will be charged to nonmembers for the supplies.

Spring auction
Sequim Sunrise Rotary holds its "Spring Fling Rotary Charities Auction" Friday, March 19, at SunLand Golf and Country Club, 109 Hilltop Drive, Sequim.
Happy hour and the silent auction start at 5:30 p.m.
Auction items include a seven-day Holland America Cruise, tickets on Southwest Airlines, box seat Mariners tickets, private dinner parties and sightseeing flights, wine and beer bonanzas, a wooden handmade treasure chest, paintings, and the Home Depot and Co-op Farm & Garden gift cards.
Tickets cost $45 and include dinner and wine.
The auction raises funds for Rotary, Sequim Education Foundation, Welfare for Animals Guild, Dungeness Valley Health and Wellness Clinic and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula Foundation.

Concert honors students
Peninsula College presents a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 14,, in memory of Chinese students Duo Li and Zhi Qin Cheng, who died in December 2009 in an auto wreck on U.S. Highway 101.
Music director Dennis Crabb says the concert represents "a turning from winter to the rebirth of our corner of earth and a reflection upon two beautiful spirits lost to tragedy between fall and winter terms."
The concert will be at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 510 E. Park St., Port Angeles, and include the Chamber Choir, Peninsula College Singers, Early Music Ensemble and the Jazz Ensemble performing music from Schubert, Bach, Des Prez and Vivaldi.
Recycle electronics, help a band
The Sequim High School band accepts recyclable consumer electronics as a fundraiser.
Acceptable items include cell phones, digital still and video cameras, MP3 players, ink jet cartridges, e-book readers, radar detectors, GPS devices and laptops.
Donors should delete personal information from the devices.
Donation bins are at Sequim High School, 601 N. Sequim Ave.; Sequim Middle School, 301 W. Hendrickson Road; and Helen Haller Elementary School, 350 W. Fir St.
Gluten-free group gathers
The Kitsap/Olympic Peninsula branch of the Gluten Intolerance Group of North America gathers for a gluten-free soup, bread and dessert luncheon at noon Saturday, March 13, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave., Sequim.
All people on a gluten-free diet or wanting to start one are invited to the support group’s luncheon.
There will be a raffle
and information exchange.
A $2.50 donation is requested to cover expenses.

Planning vacancy
The city of Sequim seeks applicants for the planning commission. Applications are available for a term expiring Jan. 10, 2011.
Applicants must live within the city limits.
The commission meets at 6 p.m. on first and third Tuesdays. It advises the city council on land use and zoning issues.
