While their former teammates vie for athletic glory in classic Sequim purple and gold, several local athletes are brandishing colors for new teams at colleges and universities across the region.

â– Christina Bruce
Bruce is a sophomore at University of Great Falls in Great Falls, Mont., with a double major in psychology and health and human performance. This 2009 Sequim High graduate recently qualified for NAIA Nationals in the marathon. That race will be in Marion, Ind., this May. Bruce has been on the dean’s list each semester at the school. As one of only three freshmen in the 2010 NAIA marathon, she finished in 3:59, good for 27th overall.
â– Zane Carey
A freshman at Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., Carey brings his 6-foot 4-inch frame to the Wildcats’ midfield. In the fall of 2010, Linfield went 7-7 in the Division II Northwest Conference and 8-9-1 overall. Carey is majoring in exercise science.
â– Anna LaBeaume
Sequim High’s record holder and two-time state champ in the shot put is also at Linfield, majoring in art and music. The freshman and 2010 Sequim High grad throws the shot for the Wildcats, most recently winning the shot put event in the Linfield Jenn Boyman Invitational with a 43-2.25-foot mark and placing fifth in the hammer throw on April 2.
â– Cory Parrish
Completing the Linfield trio is Parrish, a 2007 graduate of Sequim High School and a two-year letter-winner at Linfield where he is a business major. The Linfield senior runs middle distances for the Wildcats. Most recently he finished fourth in the 400-meter dash (52.12 seconds) at the Linfield Jenn Boyman Invitational on April 2. He also helped his 4×400 relay squad place fourth in the 10-team finals at the Jenn Boyman invite.
â– Staci Stratton
The 2007 graduate of Sequim High School finished as the University of Idaho’s record holder in the 50 freestyle and is a member of school-record holding 200 medley, 400 medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay teams. Stratton is a senior at Idaho.
â– Alli Cutting, Laura Moser
The Sequim cross-country and track duo helped Sequim High reach state four times and now race with each other at Seattle Pacific University, Tacoma. Moser placed seventh among SPU racers at the NCAA Division II West Regional cross country championships in mid-November. Moser, a sophomore, consistently places among the top seven on the Falcons’ squad. As a freshman in 2009, she was the first Falcon across the finish line at the Pete Steilberg Classic, placing 19th overall and leading SPU to a third-place team finish.
Cutting, a former state champion in cross-country and track and field, ran to a top-20 finish and helped the Seattle Pacific women take 12th place at the NCAA Division II West Regional cross-country championships in mid-November. Cutting, a freshman, placed 20th overall on a course that was covered by up to three inches of snow in places.
Cutting also races for the Falcons’ track and field squad. Most recently she placed second in the 5,000-meter race at the JD Shotwell Invitational, April 1-2 in Tacoma. She placed third in the one-mile run at the Great NW Athletic Conference championships in February, finishing in 5:11.
â– Alex Smyth
A 2006 graduate of Sequim High, Smyth competed for three years at Eastern Washington University, Cheney, before transferring to Florida State University, Tallahassee, where he was a scoring member of the Florida State University team that finished second at NCAA Cross-Country national championships.
He graduated from Eastern Washington with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a 3.50 grade-point average. He was recruited for his fifth year of eligibility by Florida State and is now a graduate student working on a master’s degree in sports management. He competed in the Florida Relays April 1-2, placing sixth in the 1,500-meter run with a 3:46 finish.
â– Reed Gunstone
A freshman at Pacific Lutheran University, Gunstone is undecided as to a major at the school but is playing tennis for the squad that has a three-match winning streak heading into this week. Gunstone helped the Lutes (5-7) top Linfield 5-4 on March 26, winning a three-set match. He is a 2010 graduate of Sequim High.
â– Kincaid Nichols
A former state 100-meter sprint champion at Sequim High School, Nichols is a junior at Central Washington University, where he races sprints in indoor and outdoor seasons. He finished fourth in both 60-meter and 200-meter dash events at the 2011 Great Northwest Athletic Conference championships in February.
â– Ary Webb
A sophomore transfer from Olympic College, Webb redshirted the 2010-2011 season at Central Washington University, Ellensburg. The Wildcats finished with a 16-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference record, won the conference tournament and finished with a 26-4 overall mark, falling in the NCAA Division II West Regional quarterfinals to Seattle Pacific. His brother Ben is a student assistant coach with the Wildcats.
â– Joe Hutchison, Ethan Hinton
A pair of Sequim High’s toughest wrestlers while in purple and gold, Hinton and Hutchison wrestle for the Southern Oregon University Raiders in Ashland. The duo helped Southern Oregon to a 9-5 mark. Hutchison wrestles at 133 pounds while Hinton grapples in the 184-pound division. Both are sophomores and 2009 graduates of Sequim High.
â– Samantha Whiteside
A school record-holder in the 100-meter sprint, Whiteside is known more for her pole vaulting abilities. The 2010 Sequim High grad is pole vaulting for the University of Washington this spring.
â– Kai Antrim
A 2008 Sequim High School graduate and school record-holder in goals, Antrim played for the Whatcom Community College (Bellingham) men’s soccer squad in 2010. Whatcom finished second in the North division and fell to Peninsula College in the quarterfinals of the NWAACC tournament in November.
â– Kathryn Roeber
A 5-foot 6-inch freshman, Roeber played softball and basketball and ran cross-country at Sequim High School and now plays hoops for the Shoreline Community College Dolphins. Roeber, a 2009 Sequim High grad, played in 19 games off the bench this season at Shoreline.
â– Stephanie Marcy
Perhaps Sequim High’s most celebrated distance runner, Marcy, a 2007 SHS grad, placed eighth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 10,000 meters to earn the first All-America honor of her career last spring, and earned All-American academic status as a cross-country runner for Stanford in the fall. She placed 18th overall in the 10,000 meters at the Stanford University Invitational March 25-26.
