Air Affaire organizers see another successful year

Pilots and drivers steered clear of cold, wet weather from the day before to enjoy a mostly sunny day at the Olympic Peninsula Air Affaire & Sequim Valley Fly-In on Aug. 27.

Emily Westcott, co-organizer/founder, said nearly 500 carloads paid to visit the Sequim Valley Airport to see planes, helicopters, hot air balloons, cool cars and more.

“We were very successful considering the weather was iffy the morning of,” Westcott said.

More than 50 airplanes and aircraft flew in, and multiple vehicles drove in for the event, including Keith Kossuth offering rides in his 1929 Travel Air Plane.

Captain Crystal Stout with the nonprofit Dream Catcher Balloon program gave more than 50 tethered rides in her Morning Star Balloon Co. basket, with proceeds helping the program support rides for veterans, senior citizens, mobility impaired individuals and others.

She attempted to blow up and place a balloon on its side for people to enjoy but it was too windy, she said.

Westcott said organizers are planning on hosting the event again in August 2023.

His mom Marilyn said their son James, 15, went up for a flight during the Air Affaire with his dad Mike. Sammy will likely go on his first wing walking adventure before the end of the year. “They know it inside and out,” she said. “I’m nervous a little bit, but I’m ready to fly,” Sammy said. “I’ve been riding along with them since I was 4.”
