An opportunistic Bainbridge squad took advantage of Sequim miscues and turned a tight Olympic League opener into a 45-22 win on Sequim on Sept. 16.

Spartan quarterback Jack Grant threw for 207 yards and two scores, and ran for another as the visiting 3A squad scored three touchdowns in a five- minute stretch of the third quarter.

The decision spoiled a strong first half from the Wolves that saw Sequim hold a brief 7-0 lead, convert four of five fourth- downs, commit just two penalties and nearly tie the game before the half’s whistle.

“The first half they really played well,” Sequim coach Erik Wiker said. “The first time [this season] they were really playing as a team.”

The result also spoiled a big game from senior tailback Aiden Gockerell, who gouged the Spartan defense for 203 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries.

Sequim quarterback Lars Wiker finished with 104 yards passing and two short touchdown runs; just one-yard plunge with 9:10 left in the third quarter trimmed Bainbridge’s lead to 20-14.

However, Bainbridge proceeded to reel off three touchdowns in a five-minute stretch of the third quarter to lead 38-14.

“The second half … a lot of that was us,” Erik Wiker said. “It’s stuff we can correct.”

Isaiah Moore led the Wolves with five receptions for 81 yards.

Micha Bryant had 12 rushes for 62 yards and two touchdowns for Bainbridge (1-2), while Luke Lavigne added three receptions for 112 yards, including a 65-yard catch for a touchdown.

Sequim (0-3) takes on rival Port Angeles on the road on Sept. 23. Kickoff at Civic Field is at 6:30 p.m. The Wolves edged Port Angeles 17-12 last season.

Erik Wiker said the Wolves’ focus for a win in the annual Rainshadow Rumble is simple: “Clean up all this stuff and be motivated.”

The Wolves return for back-to-back home dates, against Kingston for the 2022 Homecoming Game on Sept. 30, and Olympic on Oct. 7.
