OMC meeting cancelled

The Board of Commissioners of Olympic Medical Center has cancelled its Oct. 15 board meeting, as commissioners are attending the Washington State Hospital Association annual meeting in Seattle. The board’s next regularly scheduled meeting is Nov. 5.


Planning commission meets

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. tonight, Oct. 15 at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. The agenda includes Clallam County’s interim official zoning controls for recreational marijuana producers, processors and retailers (Ordinance 896). Call 417-2277 for more information.


NPBA candidate forum set

The North Peninsula Building Association will hold a candidate forum at its general membership meeting from 5:30-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Red Lion in Port Angeles. Candidates for Clallam County Commissioner District 3, Sissy Bruch and Bill Peach; and candidates for the county’s director of Community Development, Sheila Roark Miller and Mary Ellen Winborn, will attend. Savor your soil

The Sierra Club is giving two presentations on what you should know about composts. The presentation, “Know Your Compost,” will be given from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Sequim Library and from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, in the Carver Room of the Port Angeles Library. Handouts will be available and there will be plenty of discussion time, including what information citizens would like to see on compost labels and how to get transparent labeling.


Thrift shop open

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guilds Thrift Shop,  204 W. Bell St. in Sequim, will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18. Featured this month are fall fashions for everyone, furniture, pictures, books, jewelry, kitchen and household articles and lots of holiday items. All white-tagged items will be offered at half-price. Consignors and volunteers always are welcome. Call 683-7044 for information.


Grange hosts dance

There will be a dance with live music at the Sequim Prairie Grange Hall from 6-9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19. The cost is $10 per person, $15 a couple or $25 a family. Children under 12 years of age get in free. Food will be provided. The Grange Hall is at 290 Macleay Road.


PEO to host bunco fundraiser

Chapter IV PEO (Philanthropic Education Organization) will host a bunco and silent auction fundraiser at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 510 E. Park Ave., Port Angeles, at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21. Desserts and beverages will be served and prizes will be awarded. There is a $10 donation to participate.

All proceeds from the event will benefit women’s educational scholarships. PEO is an international philanthropic education organization for women. Sea star wasting disease   is topic of lecture series

Melissa Miner, a researcher at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who works remotely from Bellingham, is the featured speaker at a presentation at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Landing Mall’s Room 205, 115 E. Railroad Ave., Port Angeles. Sea stars along much of the Pacific coast of North America are experiencing a mass mortality from sea star wasting disease.

The Feiro Marine Life Center organizes citizen science volunteers to monitor a plot in Freshwater Bay, which has been hard hit by the disease. In addition, over half the sea stars in Feiro’s collection perished between June and August of this year.


Sign up for alert system

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office offers Clallam Alert System, a text messaging system that alerts citizens when there is a threat to public safety and security.

Users do not need to respond to messages, though they are encouraged to secure home and property and report sightings of the person or vehicle that may be involved in an incident.

Beachwalkers wanted

The Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST) is looking for volunteers to help pilot test a new marine debris program. Volunteers are asked to RSVP and attend the pilot training session from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Clallam County Courthouse meeting room, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles, and survey debris two times per month through March 2015. RSVP to coasst@uw.edu or 206-221-6893.


Got falling fruit? Call the gleaners

Do you have a tree or garden turning out more produce than you can handle? WSU Clallam County Gleaners are ready to pick your unwanted harvest and share it with those who can use it. Gleaning is a part of a home-grown solution to reducing food waste, increasing access to fresh and nutritious produce to community members in need and strengthening local community food systems.

Apply for educator grants

The Beta Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma announces that applications are now available for continuing education grants from the Helen Gariepy Grants for School Educators in Clallam County. Grants will be made available to selected educators who are working for professional improvement. Any educator or paraprofessional working in a Clallam County school may apply. Applications are available at www.betanuchapter.com. The deadline for submission is Nov. 15.

Habitat seeks volunteers

Soroptimist seeks award applicants

Soroptimist International of Sequim is accepting applications for the Live Your Dream Award (formerly Women’s Opportunity Award). The award is for a woman with primary financial responsibility for supporting her family and who attends or has been accepted to a vocational/skills training program or undergraduate degree program.

A cash award of $1,500 may be used to offset any costs associated with efforts to attain higher education, including books, child care and transportation.

The application is available online at www.sisequim.org. Deadline for submitting application is Nov. 15.

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at Suncrest Village Retirement Apartments, 251 S. Fifth Ave. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest, and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed.
