A trio of artistic Sequim students are giving their school a splash of color for the winter months.

Seniors Hi’ilei Robinson, Claire D’Amico and Kari Olson were busy putting the finishing touches (their signatures) on a mural on the C Building’s north wall on the SHS campus last week.

Robinson said the seed of the mural idea germinated when she moved from Hawaii to Sequim in her sophomore year. While her former high school had murals decorating the campus, Sequim High seemed a bit bare.

“I thought, this is kind of boring, [and] it’s just kind of dreary in winter,” she said.

She and D’Amico started making the rounds at local paint suppliers, securing a student discount for the project, and by late last year they had the paint and some preliminary sketches.

The trio, who each take art classes but weren’t using this as a class project, got busy and the mural idea was temporarily shelved, but they were able to finish it late last week — with permission from new SHS principal Erin Fox.

The mural depicts an unspecified river and mountain range.

“We wanted to represent where we live,” D’Amico said.

The mural was a true team project, Olson said, noting three different art styles — evident in the three primary mountain peaks (each done by a different student).

Robinson said the group is hoping to do other murals, possibly on the campus’ B Building or in the library.
