Golf: Roughriders top Wolves on links

Austin Worthington shot a 5-over par round of 41 to earn match medalist honors as Port Angeles sank Sequim 175-199 in a boys golf match held March 30 at Peninsula Golf Club.

“It’s been a while since PA beat Sequim in golf; kudos to our kids,” Roughriders coach Bob Anderson said. (PA last beat Sequim in March 2015).

“Tip of the cap goes out to Bob Anderson and the PA Boy’s golf team,” SHS coach Sean O’Mera said. “They played a heckuva match today, and it is even better when you learn that they were missing their number one golfer today. Well done.”

Sequim was led by Cole Smithson’s 42.

“While not his best, this was the best 42 he has shot, because Cole overcame some early mistakes in his round,” SHS coach Sean O’Mera said. “He recovered well, stuck with it, and really competed. Cole lived out our program motto of ‘Play, Recover, Play’ well today. Even though he lost his scorecard on the course … twice.”

Carter Cronin totaled a 50, Zack Thompson shot 51 and Lars Wiker and Cody Dunscomb tied with rounds of 56.

“The rest of the team just flat-out struggled,” O’Mera said. “PA’s home course is a challenge, no doubt, but it is not this challenging. Sometimes, you just don’t have your best stuff.

On the girls’ side, Port Angeles stayed unbeaten with a 224-242 win over their rivals. Piper Williams was the match medalist, shooting the day’s low round of 52 for Port Angeles.

Sequim’s Jelissa Julmist led the Wolves with a 59, while Emily Post had a 60, Ava Johnson a 61 and Isabella Williams a 62.

The Wolves (both 2-3) are off for spring break, returning to action with home matches April 11 against Kingston an April 13 against olympic.
