Veterans Corner: Free spaghetti feed for our veterans

The Sequim Valley Lions are putting on a free veterans spaghetti dinner from 4-6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 15, at the Sequim VFW, 169 E. Washington St.

There will be random veteran appreciation drawings. Non-veterans can eat for $5. There will be a band playing live music from 6-8:15 p.m.

For those who’ve passed

The Clallam County Veterans Association holds a Bell Ringing Ceremony the last Friday of every month at 1 p.m. at Veterans Park next to the Clallam County Courthouse in Port Angeles.

This ceremony honors veterans who have passed away in the last month by ringing the replica Liberty Bell as their name is read. A flag can be presented to the family if it is requested ahead of time.

To ensure that every veteran is honored, families can notify Levi Douglas, veterans program coordinator for the Northwest Veterans Resource Center, of the passing of your loved one.

This is critical if your loved veteran passed away outside of Clallam County. You can email details to nwvrc@outlook.com or call 360-797-1791 or fax 360-797-1850. Please give the full name of the veteran, date of death, branch of military service and any details you would like noted. The center is open 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday-Thursday.

Please pass this to friends and neighbors with veterans in the family.

DAV helping disabled veterans

Disabled American Veterans Chapter 5 is open 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. each Wednesday at Worksource, 810 W. Brackett Road, Sequim, to assist with claims and information.

There are three service officers — Rob Brooke, Derrell Sharp and John Joseph — ready to meet with veterans on a no appointment, walk in basis.

Veterans can also call 360-775-6482 to get information.

Thanks for the wheels

Many thanks to Mt. Olympus Chapter of the Marine Corps League for purchasing a used 2013 Ford Explorer to donate to Sarge’s Veteran Support. It is white, like new, with a little more than 60,000 miles on it and new off road tires. This vehicle will be a big help to the staff for outreach and transporting veterans.

This was made possible by the unanimous approval of the members, not only Marines, but associate members as well. The detachment is a proud supporter of the North Olympic Regional Veterans Housing Network now known as Sarge’s Veteran Support.

Assistance sought for VFW hall

Sarge’s Veteran Support is in need of help finishing the construction at the Forks VFW Hall to transition it to The Attic second hand store for the agency. They are trying to raise $16,500 to cover the cost of creating a storefront with plate glass windows on the building so that they can open the store.

All proceeds from this store go to support the programs and housing for homeless veterans. Donations can be mailed to: 250 Ash Ave, Forks WA, 98331.

West End Stand Down

Voices For Veterans will be holding the in person West End Stand Down from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, at the Forks Elks Lodge at 941 Merchants Road, Forks.

All veterans are welcome to come and talk to the service providers, access the Clothing Room, get a haircut, have a hot breakfast and lunch and visit with fellow veterans.

MOAA boosts Civil Air Patrol

Three representatives of the Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) attended the 7 March “Cohort” (Open House) of the Dungeness Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), and delivered a donation of $1,000 for Cadet support.

The MOAA Chapter meets monthly (usually an informal luncheon on the third Wednesday at 1 p.m.) with guest speakers. Upcoming topics include ocean programs, a tour of a USCG cutter, CAP status and the Gold Star Program.

It welcomes all active duty, National Guard, reserve, retired and former commissioned officers and warrant officers. Surviving spouses of deceased officers are also welcome.

If interested in attending, please RSVP to Judy Havel at judy.havel@gmail.com or 540-287-4254.
