Sequim High School’s golf squads earned a clean sweep in their final home matches of the 2023 season, knocking off Bremerton at The Cedars at Dungeness on May 2.
Under beautiful sunny skies and warm temperatures, the Wolves’ boys topped the Bremerton Knights on May 2 to cap its home campaign by 18 shots, winning 175-193.
Sequim’s girls dominated their match against the Knights, winning by 52 strokes (211-263).
While Sequim’s boys team got solid play from each golfer, SHS coach Sean O’Mera said the day belonged to senior Cole Smithson. In his final regular prep match, Smithson rebounded from a double bogey on the first hole to play the rest of his round at even par, shooting a career-best tying 38 and earning medalist honors.
“Cole has worked so hard since the last round of state last year, and at times, he has put too much pressure on himself,” O’Mera said. “Today, even though he didn’t have his best swing, he found a way. It is such a pleasure to coach a kid that just keeps coming back, despite all obstacles.”
Zack Thompson shot a 44, followed by Carter Cronin with a 45 and Lars Wiker shot a 48.
”Lars’ driver is continuing to become a weapon, and he closed his nine holes with some towering drives,” O’Mera said.
Cody Dunscomb fired a 49, and Zak Bell — playing in place of Kyle Sharpe who was out because of an illness — shot a 55.
On the girls’ side senior Isabella Williams led all players with a 49, followed closely by Emily Post (53), Jelissa Julmist (54) and Kendra Dodson (55). Lucianna Taylor led Bremerton with a round of 60.
Sequim was scheduled to play at the Viking Mixed Invitational in Port Ludlow on May 4; results were not available at press time.

Playing on the most beautiful day weather-wise of the season on April 25, the top four Sequim boys golfers represented the team well at the Duke Streeter Invitational in Port Angeles, finishing in third place out of six competing teams.
The duo of Cronin and Smithson finished fifth overall in a strong field.
Thompson and Wiker also played well, O’Mera said, finishing with a scramble score of 76.
Port Angeles High School won the tourney, ahead of Bainbridge, Sequim, North Kitsap, Olympic and North Mason.
