Irving Almer Mortensen

August 17, 1947 – May 4, 2023

I am not gone

I will be wandering through the forest

I will be strolling the beach

I will be carried by the winds.

Port Townsend — Irv was born in Hood River Oregon where he grew up in nature, wandering the woods, riverbanks and orchards with his dog Fella. In elementary and junior high school, he met his three closest friends, Dan, Charlie and Lowell, and those friendships thrived for 60+ years.

He loved radios. In 1967 he enlisted in the Navy to be trained in electronics to avoid the draft. They sent him to San Francisco during the Summer of Love, which changed everything. A compassionate base psychologist let him out with an honorable discharge within the first year of his six-year stint. He loved to relate his own story to Arlo Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant.

He returned to Eugene, where he met his first wife Ellen Brewer. They married in 1969 and welcomed daughter Laura in 1973. He attended DeVry Institute of Technology and earned an AA degree in electrical engineering technology. By 1977, the family was living in Seattle. Irv was working in electronics for Honeywell and very involved in his daughter’s education and local school board politics. Irv and Ellen divorced in 1988.

In 1989, he met Betty Oppenheimer; they were married in 1991. In 1993, they moved to the Diamond Point property that Irv’s parents had purchased in 1976. Over the next 30 years, Irv worked as a carpenter/contractor in Clallam and Jefferson counties, and the couple became very involved members of the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (QUUF). Irv played a major role in the church’s two building construction projects in Port Townsend – in 1997 and again in 2008.

Irv was an avid photographer, which allowed him to capture his unique views of nature and his surroundings. When he “retired” in 2010, he continued to work tirelessly on investment properties that he and Betty had purchased to help fund a real retirement. In 2022, Irv and Betty moved to Port Townsend. In March, he was diagnosed with advanced stage pancreatic cancer.

Irv was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Verna (Ecklund) Mortensen and his brother Dale T. Mortensen. He is survived by his wife Betty and daughter Laura, brother Arne (Stella), sister-in-law Beverly, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1 p.m. on June 17th at QUUF, 2333 San Juan Avenue, Port Townsend.

Henrik Willaume Elbo

June 23, 1942- October 9, 2022

During the dark days of World War II, Henrik Elbo was norn in Copenhagen, Denmark to his mother, Maja Schjodt and father, Kaj Elbo. The latter died when Henrik was only eight years old, but in spite of many hardships, he was raised in a loving home by his Mom and older sister, Margit.

From the time he was a boy, he had a fascination for airplanes, writing, travel, and going to America. The latter dream came to fruition when, after much hard work and saving every penny possible, the family immigrated- first to Canada in 1958 where Henrik served in the Canadian Army, and, subsequently, to the United States in 1962. In 1963 he joined the US Air Force and acquired both his private and commercial pilot licenses. He was injured during his deployment in Vietnam and was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1971 after 8 years of service.

During the next few years, Henrik indulged in his favorite pastimes- reading and writing. He had inherited his father’s gift of the pen, wrote articles for a Danish Magazine while still a young adult, and wrote a science fiction novel titled “Inheritance”, published in 2011.

In 1973 his sister, Margit, introduced him to his wife-to-be, Marijke, who was working at Universal Studios as manager of international TV distribution. There was no question that it was a perfect match and wedding bells rang in 1974. During their 48 years of married life they enjoyed many travel adventures, visiting both domestic and international places of interest, either by car, plane, sleeping in tents, or travel trailer. Once the excitement of cruising took hold, it became their most favorite means of travel. The retirement years were definitely all that Henrik had hoped they would be.

Henrik was warm, kind, and the consummate gentleman in the true sense of the word with a ‘wicked’ sense of humor, always ready to have a good time. The sparkle in his eyes spoke volumes and he will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Marijke, pet toy poodle (Bijou), and a newly discovered extended family residing in Canada.

A Memorial Mass/Celebration of Life service is scheduled for Saturday, May 20 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, located at 121 E. Maple Street in Sequim, WA. The service will begin at 11:00 o’clock and will be immediately followed by a luncheon reception in the Parish Hall. All are welcome to attend.

Patricia ‘Pat’ Anne (Fowler) Baldwin

Patricia “Pat” Anne (Fowler) Baldwin, a long-time resident of Sequim, WA, age 73, passed away on April 23, 2023, after a brief illness.

Pat was born in 1949 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia (now Serbia), to Anne Marie (Snelsire) and William A. Fowler, first Secretary-Consul on Economics, American Embassy, Yugoslavia. Her birth was paid for with a requested box of groceries from the Embassy commissary. Through her father’s career with the US State Department, Pat attended elementary schools in Stockholm, Sweden, Geneva, Switzerland, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Arlington, VA. She attended Marymount Junior High in Arlington, VA, and Mann Junior High in Lakewood, WA, before graduating 4th in her class from Clover Park High School in Lakewood, WA in 1967.

Pat attended Seattle University for 3 years with a major in math, where she met her future husband Thomas L. Baldwin.

They were married in Seattle, WA, on October 2, 1970. Tom joined the military and was immediately posted to Fort Lee,

VA where their first daughter, Nancy was born in 1971. They were then stationed in Fort Bragg, NC where their twins,

Diana and Donna were born in 1972. After Pat and Tom divorced, Pat moved to Sequim with her 3 daughters in 1974.

Pat started working at Ray Cays Realty in 1975. After 7 years she started working for the Public Utility District (PUD) from

May 1982 to her retirement in 2010.

During her many years in Sequim, Pat was very active with the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church choir. She enjoyed traveling

to Alaska, Mexico, Hawaii, Europe, and Israel, and bringing back Christmas ornaments. She enjoyed cross-stitching, collecting stamps and watching Seahawks games; she loved reading murder mysteries, and spending time with Dale, family, and friends.

Pat is preceded in death by her parents and beloved daughter Nancy Baldwin. She is survived by her daughters Donna (Jason) Ritchie of Trophy Club, TX, Diana (Jeffrey) Johnson of Washington, UT, grandchildren Lawrence “Willy” Raymond of Sequim, WA, Makayla and Austin Ritchie, and Sophia Johnson, and loving partner Dale Erickson of Sequim, WA. She is also survived by her sister Carol Belenski of Anchorage, AK, nieces Christine (Brian) Dollerhide of Anchorage, AK, and Stacie (Sean Gould) Belenski of Lacey, WA.

A celebration of life will take place, Saturday, June 17th at the John Wayne Marina’s Hendrick’s Room from 1:30 to 3:30 in Sequim, WA.

Dallas Satterlee Drew

April 6, 1934 – April 10, 2023

Sequim, Washington-Dallas Drew, family man, sailor, hiker, engineer, and friend passed away just four days after celebrating his 89th birthday.

Dallas was born in Long Beach, California, the youngest child of Kress Gregg Drew, Sr. and Maebelle Satterlee Drew. After high school he served in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army. Dallas enjoyed being near the water, especially swimming and sailing. At one time he was a member of the Sequim Bay Yacht Club. The hills and trails around Sequim were familiar territory as he walked and hiked with friends. One of his favorite outings was Tuesday breakfast at Stymie’s.

Dallas and Nancy Renn met at Long Beach Methodist Church in March of 1963. On December 20, 1963 they were married in that church. They recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. In the years that followed, they welcomed two sons, Kress Gregg Drew,III and Reed Bernard Drew. The family made many happy memories and friends, as they lived and worked in Lakewood, Manhattan Beach, Issaquah, Enumclaw, Lake Arrowhead and finally settling in Sequim in 1994.

Dallas is survived by his wife, Nancy, sons Kress, Reed and his wife Shelley, several nieces and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, older brother, Kress Drew, Jr., sister, Diane Drew Coltrane and nephew Michael Mullins.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00A.M., Saturday June 24, 2023 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Sequim. Donations in his memory may be made to Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County or to St. Luke’s.

Jack Gordon Campbell

Jack Gordon Campbell of Sequim died of age-related causes at Sherwood Assisted Living on May 8, 2023.

He was 92.

Campbell was born July 4, 1930.
