Raised on a small dairy farm in Sequim, Kay much preferred being outside with the animals instead of working inside. She attended Sequim schools and graduated from Sequim High School in 1965. Following graduation, Kay worked in Sequim while taking classes at Peninsula Community College.

Kay served with the United States Naval Reserve Unit at Whidbey Island in the 1970’s. During her active duty time she enjoyed travel to other parts of the world. But a few years after moving to Vancouver, Washington, the monthly drive to Whidbey Island made her decide to leave the service.

In June of 1975, Kay was hired as a Secretary with the Washington State Patrol in Bremerton. Before too long she advanced to a dispatch communications officer position and moved to Mount Vernon. She loved her dispatch work and the troopers became her ‘family’ to care for. Kay was very good at her job and gave quick and accurate responses that the troopers depended on. Later she moved again with WSP to Bellevue and finally to Vancouver where she worked until she retired in 2005 after 30 years of service.

Always an animal lover beginning with Siamese cats while at home and later Norwegian Elkhounds captured her heart. Honey, her first Norwegian Elkhound, was her greatest love. She always had 2 and sometimes 3 dogs, often Rescued Elkhounds.

Kay was an avid reader and loved to garden – especially growing heirloom tomatoes in her veggie garden which she loved to give away. She shared with us her love for home canned tuna. A gift of tuna ended with many developing a passion to can our own. Following retirement in 2005 she turned into a sock knitting pro. Making hundreds of socks over those years; most of which she gave away. Many of her family and friends can attest to the wonderful handmade socks we were gifted from her. They were and are our treasures from Kay.

A celebration of her life will be held on her birthday, Friday, July 14 at 1:00 pm at Olympic View Church of God, 503 North Brown Road, Sequim. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders, PO Box 5023, Hagerstown MD 21741, or your favorite charity.
