Woman, child killed in head-on collision near Gardiner

A 33-year-old woman and 7-year-old boy died in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 101 near Gardiner on July 7.

Shayla R. Umphenour of Port Ludlow and the unidentified minor were declared deceased at the scene after the crash at about 4:45 p.m. Friday at milepost 278, east of the Clallam/Jefferson County line and approaching Discovery Bay, according to a Washington State Patrol report.

A Sequim woman in the other vehicle, 66-year-old Elizabeth McDaniel, was injured and transported to Jefferson General Hospital.

According to the State Patrol, Umphenour and the child were not wearing seatbelts; McDaniel was.

According to the report, Umphenour was traveling southbound in a 2006 Honda Civic; when the vehicle approached slowing traffic on the highway it crossed the center line into the oncoming lane, where it struck McDaniels’ 2012 Buick Enclave.

The Civic came to rest on the highway’s northbound shoulder and the Enclave in the middle of the highway.
