Long-time Sequim resident, Dorothy Richardson, passed away May 6, 2023. She would have turned 91 in October.

Dorothy and husband, Ed, (who preceded her in death in November of 2018) moved to Sequim in 1974. They were among the first residents of McDonnell Creek Ranch.

After moving to Sequim Dorothy was hired by the U.S. Post Office as a rural mail carrier. She had fond memories of her many friends and coworkers at the Post Office. Over the years she and Ed, at different times, enjoyed trying their hand at raising cows, sheep, pigs and chickens.

During the Summer they always cultivated a big garden that produced lots of fresh vegetables. Dorothy loved flowers. She planted lots of them. The house looked spectacular when they were all in bloom. Dorothy felt blessed to have such great neighbors. She frequently remarked how wonderful they were and how much she appreciated the safe feeling she

had living in her community. She often talked about the many wonderful times we had as a family growing up. And how grateful she was for the life she and Ed shared.

She was ready when the Lord granted her prayers to ascend into the next life.

She is survived by her three children, Dan, Kathy and Dave. And by her six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She will be missed!

Lisa Markli

Lisa Markli

Let me tell you about a beautiful soul who lived on this Earth for 63 years.

You may have seen her riding her bike down Deer Park Road and then onto The Olympic Discovery Trail as she rode to work at NOHNN (North Olympic Healthcare Network). Or maybe she zipped past you on one of her 50-mile bike rides through the back roads around Sequim/Dungeness. She would have been the one with a startlingly beautiful smile that was really hard to miss.

You may also have seen her hiking the Seven Lake Basin trail, or maybe the Heather Park Loop trail. It’s the smile you might remember.

Lisa also taught Anatomy and Physiology at Peninsula Community College for a few years before deciding to enroll in the nursing program. She started her nursing career at the Elwa Clinic, then moved onto the med/surg ward at Olympic Medical Center, the Northwest Eye Clinic in Sequim, and finally retired on June 30th after working at NOHN for seven years.

Maybe you don’t know her by name, but my hope is that you remember her smile and those unblinking big brown eyes tat seemed to look straight into your soul.

If you remember those impish eyes and beautiful smile, then you have met my wife.

Our community, and I believe this world, is a better place because of the love and the deliberate manner in which Lisa lived her life.

If you know Lisa, you will also know that she would rather be in the mountains than any other environment on Earth. I don’t know if there is another woman (and very few men) who have solo hikes the entire Bailey Range in the Olympic National Park as many times as she did; of course, she wouldn’t admit to that. She had the agility, strength, and endurance that her elfish demeanor seemed to belie. I learned early in our love not to underestimate an elf.

Lisa left us way too early, but it might help knowing that she died in the mountains she so dearly loved.

The warm sun watched over her by day, and the stars kept her company at night, until the heroes of the US Coast Guard, US Navy, The Mountain Rescue Unit from Mt. Rainer, and over thirty volunteer search and rescue members eventually brought Lisa home to us on July 22nd.

This incredible Search and Rescue effort was orchestrated so very professionally and with tremendous compassion by the Olympic National Park lead back country ranger Chris Erickson and his crew. They did not rest until my dear Lisa was once again back home with all of us.

Lisa is survived and celebrated by her incredible mother, Patricia Markley (Sequim), her brother Scott (Spokane), and her husband, Chris Duff (Port Angeles). There will be a vibrant CELEBRATION of Lisa’s life at a date to be announced.
