Fair to crown royalty
The Clallam County Fair Royalty Princess Tea and Coronation will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, in the Home Arts building at the fairgrounds.
Tickets are $5 and available from this year’s candidates or at the door.
Amanda Little and Becky Schroepher, both from the Sequim area, are vying for the queen’s crown and a $900 scholarship.
Aircraft group to meet
The local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association, Chapter EAA 430, meets next at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Hangar 15 at the Sequim Valley Airport, 468 Dorothy Hunt Lane.
The program includes guest speakers Scott Erickson (“Preventive Maintenance”) and Linda Morrison (“Flight Review”).

Research basics explored
Genealogy how-to-research help will be offered from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, during the Research Center’s open house.
The monthly Saturday open house hours are noon-4 p.m. The public is invited to use the library and ask questions.
A $5 donation covers materials. The center is at 402 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday. Call 417-5000.
Baby shower for birds
On Saturday, from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Feb. 28, Jaye and Gary Moore from the Northwest Raptor and Wildlife Center and Cindy Daily from Discovery Bay Wild Bird Rescue will be at Wild Birds Unlimited in Gardiner with live birds of prey that have been rehabilitated.
To handle the spring influx of young birds, the groups need donations of paper towels, tissues, potty pads (human or puppy), laundry baskets, heating pads, small dishes like crocks or ashtrays, Exact Baby Bird food, mealworms, dog or cat food (wet or dry), towels, new or gently used wool blankets, vet wrap, clothespins, bleach, Dawn dish soap, hair dryers, playpens and gift certificates to Walmart or Petco.
Donations can be dropped off anytime to Wild Birds Unlimited, 275953 Highway 101, Gardiner, or call 797-7100.
Garden club talks bees
“The Life and Care of Mason Bees,” presented by Mary Flo Bruce, WSU Master Gardener, is the program on tap for the Sequim Prairie Garden Club’s March 2 meeting at 10:30 a.m.
Bruce will focus on how important bees are to life and how gardeners can attract and keep mason bees in their gardens. Refreshments follow the program.

Public hearings set
The Clallam County Charter Review Commission will be conducting a public hearing to receive comments on the county’s charter from 6:30-9:30 p.m. on Monday, March 2, at the Sequim Transit Center.
The commission meets in regular session on the first and third Mondays of the month, beginning March 16.
A special meeting will be March 11.
Mayor coffee talks set in March
The City of Sequim “Coffee with the Mayor” program continues in March. Sequim residents can meet informally with Sequim Mayor Candace Pratt, at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, March 5 and March 19 at the Mariner Cafe, located at 609 W. Washington St.
The mayor will be at a different published location each month to listen to anyone who wants to chat, ask questions, express a concern or make a comment about the city or the community.

Black pine featured in talk with society
The Dungeness Bonsai Society will host Ken Dyer of Tacoma at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 3, at Pioneer Park in Sequim.
Dyer will give a presentation on the growing, care and use of the Japanese black pine in bonsai culture as well as in the garden. He will demonstrate styling on several trees.
Dyer is a professional landscape consultant and pruner as well as a bonsai enthusiast.
Of special interest to the public will be Dyer’s explanation of the “pine cycle,” unique to both bonsai and full-size trees.

Lincoln Day Dinner tickets on sale
Tickets are now on sale for the Clallam County GOP Lincoln Day Dinner, to be held at the Elks Navel Lodge on March 7.
Cocktails start at 5 p.m. and plated dinner – choice of prime rib or Chicken Marsala – starts at 6 p.m. The keynote speaker is Washington State Republican chairman Susan Hutchison.
