City Band celebrates ‘American Icons’

The Sequim City Band closes its 2023 summer season with a concert dedicated to “American Icons” on Saturday, Sept. 9.

Coinciding with KSQM 91.5 FM’s Pet Lovers’ Day at the James Center in north Carrie Blake Park, the festival opens at 11 a.m. with pet demonstrations and vendor booths.

Live music begins at 1:30 p.m. with special guest The Hometown Band, a community band serving Kitsap County, playing show tunes, traditional concert music, popular rock and jazz pieces, and a few traditional Oktoberfest numbers in homage to the upcoming season.

The Sequim City Band’s “American Icons” begins at 3 p.m. celebrating film, Broadway, and popular music composed over the past twelve decades.

Compilations include a medley from the Broadway musical “Carousel”, a tribute to Louis Armstrong entitled “Satchmo!” featuring “What a Wonderful World” and “Hello, Dolly!”, and a medley called “The Symphonic Gershwin” with “An American in Paris”, “Cuban Overture”, and “Rhapsody in Blue” by George Gershwin.

The band will also perform “Captain America March” from “Captain America: The First Avenger” by Alan Silvestri, known for the “Back to Future” series and “Forrest Gump” film scores.

As always, concert and on-site parking are free.

The City Band’s indoor concert series begins Saturday, Oct. 28, at a time to be announced in Port Angeles High School Auditorium, followed by a show at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, at Sequim High School, and its final indoor show at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 17, in Port Angeles High School, again.
