Growing community through gardens

Eight years ago a few people came together with a joint vision of starting a community garden.

An empty lot on West Fir Street, donated by St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, became the new home for the Community Organic Garden of Sequim (COGS). The group envisioned a garden community which would represent a cross-section of the local area in ethnicity, gender and age.

A few years after this garden was established, the City of Sequim enthusiastically joined COGS and opened a second garden on the corner of Spruce Street and Sunnyside Avenue — the June Robinson Memorial Garden.

Over the years, the word “community” has taken on a much deeper meaning in the gardens. Community means feeling a sense of belonging, of wanting to contribute to the gardens in a very personal and satisfying way, of sharing garden anecdotes, tips and recipes with fellow gardeners, and of being an integral part of a garden family.
