Three gymnasts from the combined Sequim-Port Angeles prep team are headed to state after earning qualifying finishes at a district meet last week in Kent.
The prep gymnasts met some competition before the district meet at Metropolitan Gymnastics Center — snow, downed power lines and a redirected route to the ferry that put them am hour-and-a-half late, coach Rachel Sharp noted (we rose above the difficult circumstances and the girls worked hard to complete their best”) — but were able to advance Susannah Sharp and Lucy Spelker from Sequim as well as Port Angeles’ Scarlett Sullivan to the 1A/2A/3A state meet set for Feb. 23 at Sammamish High School in Bellevue.
Spelker earned state-qualifying marks in the vault (8.6 points, seventh), balance beam (8.250) and floor exercise (9.050), while Susannah Sharp advances with qualifying marks in vault (8.675,fifth) and floor (8.875).
Sullivan moves on in vault (8.5), bars (6.8) and a beam (7.975).
Last season, Sharp was 33rd in the vault, 41st on floor exercise and 78th on bars, while Spelker was 88th on the vault.
