Fastpitch: Wolves fall to Spartans in 28-run slugfest

Sequim’s fastpitch squad fell 15-13 in a wild back-and-forth slugfest with Bainbridge on March 19.

The Wolves had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t pull off the comeback.

The game featured a combined 26 hits, 12 of them by Sequim. Bainbridge had a 6-2 lead at one point, but Sequim rallied with big innings in the third and fifth to tie the game at 7-7.

The Spartans blew the game open with an eight-run sixth to make it 15-7. The Wolves rallied with a six-run sixth thanks to two-run doubles from Hannah Giddings and Mia Kirner and a two-run home run by Taylee Rome to make it 15-13. Rome pitched the seventh, striking out two and not allowing any runs to keep the Wolves close. Sequim had a shot to pull out a victory in the bottom of the seventh. Giddings had a two-out walk and Kirner hit another double to bring Rome to the plate. Rome had gotten on base in every at-bat so Bainbridge intentionally walked her to load the bases and Mikki Green popped up to end the game.

Rome finished 3-for-3 with a two walks, double, home run, four runs scored, three RBIs and two stolen bases. Kirner was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBIs. Giddings was 2-for-3 with two walks, three runs scored and two RBIs.

Green finished 2-for-5 with five RBIs and a double.

Rylin Whitehead pitched 4-and-two-thirds innings, allowing 10 hits and just three earned runs. She struck out three.

SHS falls in road games

The Wolves strung together three straight hits in their first at bats of the game and held a 1-0 lead after their half of the first inning, but it was all Tides after that as Sequim fell 14-1 at Gig Harbor on March 20.

Kirner doubled and scored on Rome’s single to right field for a 1-0 Sequim lead. Green followed with a single to left, but the Wolves couldn’t add any further scores.

The Class 3A squad took control of the game with a six-run first inning highlighted by a two-run home run by Gracie Carey, the first of two home runs for Carey.

A day later, Bremerton’s Knights’ eight-run second inning did in the Wolves on the road.

Sequim held a 4-0 lead early, putting across three in the first inning on RBI singles from Neveah Owens, Ava Ritter and an RBI double by Rylie Doig.

Rome added an RBI double in the second inning, but the Wolves couldn’t get out of the home half of the inning, allowing Bremerton to reach on a single, an error, four walks, hitting a batter and three consecutive doubles to take control.

Rome added another RBI single in the fourth, but that was all the offense for Sequim.

Looking ahead

Sequim (0-2 in Olympic League, 1-3 overall) was scheduled to host defending 2A state champ North Kitsap on March 26; results were not available at press time.

The Wolves are at North Mason on March 28.

Following spring break, Sequim hosts Kingston on April 9 and plays at Olympic on April 11.
