Clallam County Fire District 3 firefighters responded to a recreational vehicle fire Wednesday afternoon that left it a total loss off Old Olympic Highway.

Battalion Chief Chris Turner reports crews dispatched at 3:14 p.m. June 5 to the intersection of Gasman Road and Old Olympic Highway east of Port Angeles for multiple reports of an RV on fire.

An Olympic Ambulance crew returning from Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles was first on scene and confirmed the RV had been moved to the adjacent Lemmon Road, Turner said.

Carlsborg firefighters arrived next to begin extinguishing the fire while the fire district’s Tender 33 arrived on scene with 3,000 gallons of water to help completely extinguish the fire.

The RV’s owner safely escaped, but was unable to save her cat due to the fire spreading so quickly, Turner said.

Gasman Road was blocked from Old Olympic Highway temporarily while firefighters worked on the fire.

Clallam County Sheriff’s Department deputies were planning to either have the RV towed or discarded, Turner said.

The American Red Cross was contacted to help the RV owner find temporary housing.

Turner said the fire district encourages vehicles drivers to keep a working fire extinguisher in their vehicles, and at the first sign of mechanical damage, stop and check on the situation, and address all fires when they are small and can be contained early.

The fire’s cause is under investigation.
