Pavement rehabilitation north of downtown Sequim’s busiest intersection was completed sooner than scheduled.

Lakeside Industries, PR Systems and Stripe Rite finished overlay and striping work early Wednesday morning, July 3, from the Sequim Avenue/Washington Street intersection to near West Deytona Street.

Work went through weekday nights/early mornings starting June 24.

Sequim city councilors approved the contract with Lakeside last August for $496,978.00 with a 10% contingency. The contract was about $163,000 less than city staff’s initial estimate, according to city documents. It was funded at 86.5% from federal Surface Transportation Block Grant funds, and 13.5% from the city’s Transportation Benefit District fund.

City project engineer Katie Cole previously said the overlay brings the stretch of road’s pavement condition index, a national rating engineers use to estimate road condition based on various factors, from 53-58 rating depending on the area to 100.

Cole said the city last used Surface Transportation Block Grant funds distributed by Clallam County in summer 2022 to pave an overlay from the River Road roundabout to the Ninth Avenue roundabout.

Sequim Avenue has seen a lot of improvement efforts in recent months.

In June, Interwest Construction and Agate Asphalt finished the approximate $2.8 million North Sequim Avenue Sidewalk and Bike Lanes project along North Sequim Avenue and the nearby roundabout.

The firms added paved northbound and southbound lanes for vehicles and bike lanes for cyclists, a two-way left hand turn lane down North Sequim Avenue, sidewalks on the west side of the street, and Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps.

The project was funded by a Safe Routes to School Transportation Improvement Board grant, City Real Estate Excise Tax, and City Transportation Benefit District funds.
