Fire leads to Highway 101 closure Saturday night

A fire west of Gardiner on Saturday night (Aug. 17) led first responders to close a portion of U.S. Highway 101 as firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.

Clallam County Fire District 3 staff said the fire’s cause is under investigation.

Jefferson County Public Utility District staff report they are unaware of any electrical issues involving their equipment that may have led to a fire in that area.

The fire spread in roadside trees east of Diamond Point Road and Chicken Coop Road on the Jefferson C0unty side, near its eastern border with Clallam County.

The Department of Transportation reports that the westbound roadway was closed at 6:46 p.m. and traffic was detoured onto Old Gardiner Road.

Fire crews turned the scene over to the Department of Natural Resources at 10:09 p.m. who patrolled for hot spots, reports the fire district.

The incident was cleared at 3:55 a.m. Aug. 18, WSDOT reports.
