Some late-game heroics kept Peninsula College’s teams undefeated in a pair of doubleheaders last week.

On Sept. 11, Lauren Lases scored twice in the final 15 minutes as Peninsula College shook off the rust from an extended layoff in time to rally for a 3-2 win over Skagit Valley in a Northwest Athletic Conference women’s soccer match.

The Pirate women hadn’t played an official game since Aug. 21, with scrimmages against Multnomah and Northwest University on Aug. 27 and Sept. 4.

Trailing 2-1 for 30 minutes of the second half, Lases equalized with a score in the 76th minute and notched the eventual game-winner on an assist by Serayah Gooler in the 87th minute.

Shiori Shintaku scored an unassisted goal in the first half to round out Peninsula’s goal scorers.

The Pirate men scored four second-half goals to open up a tie game and shut out Skagit Valley 4-0 on the road.

The men also had some rust, having not played since Aug. 31.

Nil Grau and Ezrah Ochoa each notched a goal and an assist for Peninsula. Joshua Kanyere scored, and Edwin Diaz rounded out the goals for the Pirates off an assist by Pau Vivas.

Sweeping Edmonds

Three days later in Edmonds, the Pirate men got a goal in the 88th minute to pull out a 2-1 win over Ethe Tritons.

Meanwhile, the Peninsula women cruised with a 9-0 win over Edmonds, as they scored seven goals in the second half.

The men’s game was knotted up at 0-0 until the 61st minute when Grau broke through for an unassisted goal.

Edmonds bounced right back with a goal in the 78th minute.

The game appeared headed to a tie with only minutes remaining when Jamie Joyce got the go-ahead goal just two minutes before the end of regulation. His goal was assisted by Grau.

Edmonds had just the one shot on goal as Peninsula had seven shots on goal.

The women’s game was likewise close early. The Pirates scored in the first 23 seconds on an unassisted goal by Shintaku. Lases added a goal in the 18th minute, but the score remained 2-0 into the half.

In the second half, the Pirates erupted for three goals in seven minutes early, then added another four goals in the last 10 minutes of the match for the final margin.

Shawn Larson and Kyla Hughes each finished with two goals, while Risa Nishida, Desiree Dutra and Paige Johnson all had goals, while Jaeda Mae Edayan had an assist.

Coming up

The Peninsula women (2-0, 4-0) play their first home North Region game at Wally Sigmar Field at 5 p.m. on Sept. 18 against a good Everett team (1-0, 3-1-1), while the Peninsula men (2-0, 5-0) play a solid Everett men’s team (1-0, 5-1) at 7:15 p.m.

The Pirates host Whatcom on Saturday, Sept. 21, with the women kicking off at noon and the men at 2:15 p.m.
