Football: Wolves control second half in win over Elma

Sequim held Elma in check defensively all game, limiting the Eagles to 112 yards of total offense and zero offensive points in a 28-7 non-league win on Sept. 20, the Wolves’ first road game of the season.

Elma’s lone score came on a 6-yard fumble return in the second quarter.

The Wolves (2-1) trailed 7-6 at halftime, but stuck to their game plan and controlled the second half offensively.

“We had some offensive miscues early that kept us from really getting on track,” coach Ian Henley said.

“Elma did a good job of blitzing our running attack all game. The difference was our guys just trusting the scheme and having the confidence to keep pushing forward and trusting the yards and points would come.

“We practice hard, and that showed in the fourth quarter as we just got stronger and exerted our offensive will as the game went on.”

SHS quarterback Zeke Schmadeke led Sequim’s running game with 27 carries for 181 yards and two touchdowns. Schmadeke also threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Hampton in the fourth quarter.

Liam Wiker capped the scoring with a 19-yard ramble late in the fourth quarter.

Elma (2-1) was coming off a 26-7 at Stevenson.

Coming up: PA, Homecoming golf fundraiser

It’s a big week for the Wolves: Sequim hosts its Homecoming — and rival Port Angeles — on Friday, Sept. 27, in the latest installment of the Rainshadow Rumble.

The Roughriders (0-3) dropped a 28-6 decision at home against North Mason on Sept. 20.

PA topped Sequim 37-10 last season.

Sequim is at Bremerton on Oct. 4 and at North Kitsap on Oct. 10, a Thursday special in Poulsbo, before returning home to play Olympic on Oct. 18.

The Sequim Football Boosters are holding a nine-hole, two-person scramble golf tournament at The Cedars at Dungeness golf course, 1965 Woodcock Road, before the rivalry game on Sept. 27.

A 3 p.m. shotgun start is planned. Cost is $50 for the public, $25 for members/employees.

The fee includes green fees, cart use, KP prizes and long drive competition.

Port Angeles fans are encouraged to play in the tournament.
