Studium Generale sets 2024 fall schedule

Peninsula College’s Studium Generale lecture series returns this fall, offering a diverse lineup of thought-provoking presentations.

The series, which kicked off with a Traditional Welcome Ceremony on Oct. 3, will feature renowned experts, community partners and cultural celebrations throughout the quarter.

All events begin at 12:35 p.m. and are held in The Little Theater on the main campus of Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles or via livestream on Zoom.

• Oct. 10 — All In Film Festival

In honor of October as National Disabilities Employment Month, Resilience Month, Down Syndrome Awareness Month and Disabilities History Month, Studium Generals will host a short film and discussion about the talent, creativity and voices of neuro-diverse individuals.

• Oct. 24 — Science of Hope

Studium Generale has collaborated with the Clallam Resilience Project, Kitsap Strong and community partners to bring Jeff Allen to our stage in recognition of Resilience Month. Allen, an expert in community resilience and Hope Ambassador since 2019, will present on the impact of hope on well-being.

• Oct. 31 — Working Dogs for Conservation and Environmental Justice from the Mountains to the Sea

Celina Natoyiipoka Gray (Blackfeet & Métis) will present “Working Dogs for Conservation and Environmental Justice from the Mountains to the Sea.” Gray is EJ Assistant Director – Working Dogs for Conservation and Chair, Native People’s Wildlife Management Working Group of The Wildlife Society.

• Nov. 7 — Building Resilience on the Peninsula: Disaster Preparedness

Justine Chorley, the Clallam County Emergency Management Coordinator, will discuss disaster preparedness for the individual, neighborhood, and community and educate attendees on how to get involved in community efforts.

• Nov 14 — Strong at the Broken Places

Bill Maier, son of E. John Maier, founding president of Peninsula Community College, will explain the healing power of writing “A Boy at War,” the memoir/novel of his time in the American/Vietnam War.

• Nov. 21 — Thomas Connery; Current Currents Currently

Enjoy an artist lecture by Thomas Connery, whose solo exhibition, “Current Currents Currently,” will be featured in the PUB Gallery of Art. Connery is the artist in residence at Peninsula College and is a celebrated teacher as well as a ceramic artist.

• Dec. 5 — Marine Resources Committee

This is an opportunity to learn about the work of The Clallam Marine Resources Committee — an advisory committee to the Board of Clallam County Commissioners. They are a group of dedicated volunteers working in Clallam County on marine issues and engaging in local marine monitoring and stewardship projects.
