Rotarians refurbish park bridges, signs
In 2014, the Sequim Sunrise Rotary took on a community project to restore the Sister City Park which is located in Carrie Blake Park. Project coordinator Eric Mahnerd returned to the park recently to see if there would be any additional requirements for upkeep. While the Sister City Park needed no additional work, he noticed that three Carrie Blake Park entrance signs, along with two pedestrian bridges located within the park, were in need of restoration.
Working with Pam Leonard-Ray, volunteer coordinator for the City of Sequim, and Joe Irvin, assistant to the city manager/parks manager, a plan was developed to complete the projects – the city would provide the materials and the Rotary would provide the manpower.
The sign bases and bridges were power-washed, sanded and stained. New roofing paper was installed on the bridge decking. The actual signs were removed, scrubbed clean, waxed and buffed to their original luster.
The Sunrise Rotarians working on the project were Chis Coolures, Peter Bahnsen, Eric Mahnerd, Paul McHugh, Jim Pickett, Dave Salmon, Kathy Schreiner and Jack Tatom. In total, over 75 man hours were expended on the project. Kathy Schreiner, Community Service co-chairman said, “It gives our club a great deal of satisfaction when we work on community projects. Based on the positive feedback we have been receiving from people using the park, I think the project was a success!”
