Playing on a poor, muddy field, the Sequim Wolves battled Eatonville tough, but fell 1-0, losing two players to injury in the bad conditions, at the West Central District tourney opening round on Nov. 2.
“Their field was the worst I’ve seen in a long time,” Sequim coach Haley Sue Freeman said. “It was basically a mud pit. The girls did a great job of practicing mental toughness, playing their game, and not letting that get to them.”
Freeman said Ivy Barrett and Raimey Brewer both had to leave the game with serious ankle injuries.
“The team played hard, and until the very end,” Freeman said. “They did not let up.
“We had Ruby Moxley-Horgan who stepped up and played central midfield for us after our injuries, and Olive Bridge filled in for our defensive midfielder as well,” she said.
She also said goalkeeper Kalli Grove had some great one-on-one saves and that the Wolves (5-9) had just one defensive breakdown, which Eatonville was able to take advantage of.
“It was a tough way to end the season, but the girls and our team have a lot to be proud of,” Freeman said. “I am looking forward to next year, and building on this year.”
Senior Night rout
Sequim had its highest-scoring game in more than a decade and a half, pounding a flurry of goals past Bremerton (3-11, 3-13) in a 13-1 victory on Senior Night to cap off its regular season on a high note on Oct. 29.
“It was a wonderful team game. They played hard, and it was evident they were playing for each other,”Freeman said, all the Wolves’ seniors scored in the game, including Izzy Turrey, a senior on the junior varsity team.
“I’m so proud of them for working together so efficiently, and as a team,” Freeman said. “We have come a long ways since our first game in September”
Sasha Yada led the way with a hat trick while Brewer also had a huge game with two goals and three assists.
Libby Turella and Moxley-Horgan also scored a pair of goals, with Ruby adding an assist.
Also scoring was Grove, who normally plays keeper; she added an assist. Barrett had a goal and an assist, while Amara Gonzalez and Lily Sparks each had a goal. Kiley Winter tallied a pair of assists while Kaiya Robinson had an assist.
The Wolves had a total of 31 shots and 20 shots on goal.
It was the highest offensive output by the Wolves since a 14-0 non-league win over Forks in 2008.
Sequim has shown it is capable of scoring this season with two other games of six goals and two games with five goals. In 13 games, the Wolves have 41 goals, third best in the Olympic League. The Wolves had a pair of nine-goal games last season.
