Updated: Man found deceased inside house fire Tuesday afternoon

An investigation remains underway to determine the cause of death of a man found inside a house fire west of Sequim on the afternoon of Nov. 12.

Battalion Chief Elliott Jones with Clallam County Fire District 3 (FD3) said the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office investigated the scene Tuesday night on the 100 block of Barnes Road, south of Atterberry Road, to see how the older, unnamed man died.

On Nov. 13, Clallam County Chief Criminal Deputy Amy Bundy said there was no foul play related to the man’s death and she was waiting on next of kin to be notified and an autopsy to be conducted before releasing his identity.

The Clallam County Coroner’s Office assumed jurisdiction over the man with the autopsy still pending as of Nov. 18.

The man’s neighbor reported a house fire to 9-1-1 at 12:41 p.m. Nov. 12, with units arriving on scene 10 minutes later.

Jones said they had two attack water lines on the home quickly, and firefighters discovered the deceased man after they had knocked the fire back.

The home was significantly full of items, and heavily damaged from the fire, Jones said.

No other people or pets were found in the home.

The fire was extinguished at 2:50 p.m. and under fire watch until 10 p.m. to ensure the roof didn’t have any more hot spots, Jones said.

No nearby vehicles, structures or trees were damaged during the fire. The home was being rented, Jones said.

On Thursday, Bundy said in a press release that deputies were requested after firefighters discovered the deceased man.

Sheriff deputies performed a death investigation alongside a fire investigator, Bundy said.

Their preliminary investigation revealed two potential incendiary devices within proximity of the man found on a sofa — a space heater and a propane torch in the “on” position.

Bundy’s press release reiterated that there was no evidence of foul play, and the fire was not deemed suspicious.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation, fire district staff said.

For the fire, 19 firefighters from FD3, three firefighters from Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue, two deputies with the Sheriff’s Office, and two EMTs with Olympic Ambulance responded.
